Service manual? Where to buy?

I'm looking for a factory type service manual for an '85 GSL-SE. Something very thorough.

I don't want the Haynes/Chilton - they are garbage.

I figured it would be easy to find an FSM online, but I couldn't find one anywhere.

Do they not exist? I would prefer a paper version; I very much dislike the .pdf online versions.

Where do I buy it? My local dealer said they are not available for this car (something I find very hard to believe)

I tried searching, and found no related content.

Thanks guys!

Seriously?

Download it from my signature. Click Print. Reload Printer Often. (single sided ~600 pages)

They can be bought online but they are hundreds of dollars and the quality is still a bit substandard (it IS from the 80's)

Re: Quality.

It still cheeses me that the original FSM I bought (not cheaply, either) has far worse photo quality than does the scanned PDF version linked in your sig.

Obviously, the book that was scanned was a much earlier print, and somewhere along the line Mazda started making "copies of a copy of a copy." Many pix look like cartoons.

But I still treasure it.

dj's resources are exceptional and a real gift to the RX-7 community.

But if you want a good original hard copy of the Mazda RX-7 FSM (a little easier to manage under the hood than the 600 page homemade version, with excellent photos if not a reprint, plus save printing time and expense) you can usually find them on ebay for around $25-$35 for the 1985 version (I have two, I paid $25 for each, plus shipping).

Or for less $ you can snag the the 1984 version, which should be the same, since the cars didn't change from '84-'85 (I haven't personally seen the '84 version, but it should be fine).

Here's one coming up on ebay tomorrow, no bids yet, opening bid is $17.50, but check to be sure it's original and not a reprint:

I bought one off ebay that was a fake. The photos were black blobs. ( copies of copies) It even had the factory appearing blue cover.

To make sure you get a real one, look for one with 3 holes punched into the book. Mazda made it to go into a 3 ring binder. All my factory manuals have these holes.

Good point, my two originals have the holes, I see that one one on ebay does not.

An 84 would be fine. There is a supplemental change manual on my server with corrections to the 84 manual. Also, make sure they have 3 hole punches.

Or, if you are cheap... click my damn sig.

Well, I'll be a sunuvabitch...

Mine has no holes.

On the first page, it reads "Reprint in the U.S.A." The scanned version has the 79 copyright in the same place.

The part numbers are different:
Scanned is 1038-10-79H LE-FUC
My hardcopy is 1110-10-84G, and also bears (9999-95-018B-80) (which matches MazdaTrix's listed part number)

I also notice that my hardcopy is on US "letter" size paper (8.5x11)

The scanned version is on Japanese-style A4 paper. Taller, slightly narrower.

My wiring diagram, which I direct bought from Mazda design senter at Sevenstock 7, is holepunched, and on A4 paper.

But I bought my hardcopy from... Mazdatrix, I THINK. Been many, many years - - before e-bay existed, around 1989 or so.

Maybe Mazda was getting them reprinted in the US at that point, rather than shipping dead trees around the world?

I know I paid $60-some bucks for it at the time.

Check Amazon.com too, they offer used books. I have 8-9 FSMs, all bought through eBay. Picked up an RX4 manual for 4 bucks once.

One thing for '84 vs. '85. The '85 has the wiring diagrams as part of the FSM. The '84 book does not (the wiring diagrams are in their own book). Go for the '85, even if your car is an '84.

Good point Kent. If you purchase the 84 AUTHENTIC FSM, you'll need the wiring diagram too.

Here's one on ebay, got the holes so maybe this one is AUTHENTIC?

If you're gonna use the FSM, do not buy the reprints - the ones without the holes. Seriously. The reprints have horrible pics.

Thanks for the informative thread guys! I'm going to try to find an '85 manual, because I'm particularly interested in the wiring diagrams as I'm planning on a swap. Thanks!

+1, but for SCCA IT racing you have to have a service manual and the reprints are better than the alternatives.

That and I did not know it was a reprint with crapping pictures when I bought it on Ebay for $50, I think.

There's several of those phony ones on ebay now for both the 84 and 85 FSM, advertised as genuine Mazda shop manuals.

Buyer be ware!

Look for those binder holes, better yet get a photo of a page with pictures on it, it's immediately obvious if it is a photocopy or the real thing.

I think they may actually be a legit, lower quality, later version... But they are definitely lower quality.
