Sending units, rough idle, and non working fan...
So I have a 85 GSL-SE and went to install an E-fan. I bought the Painless wiring kit, but didnt want to drill into the housing or anything, so I just figured I could use the stock sending unit and just cut the connectors and wire it into the Painless relay as is. What I didnt know, was that there were more than one temp sending unit on the 13b. The one I used was the one above the water pump below the thermostat. Now my car idles like crap, sounds like a misfire kinda. and doesnt drive that well either. I read somewhere on here that sending unit controls the choke? If the wires are cut, my car should run fine after it gets warmed up correct? And can I use that unit to wire into the relay or am I going to have re-do everything and use the one in rear housing?

The sender for the temp gauge is below the oil filter, near that 'mushroom' looking thingy and has a single wire. Thyis sender won't work for your purpose either. The sending unit you used needs replaced with a stock one for the engine to idle/run correctly.
I have an E-fan mounted on the widebody. I bought one of those temp probes that clips to the backside of the radiator core to turn the fan on/off. Most auto parts stores carry them for about 25 bucks. I bought the adjustable one, wired it through a relay and then set it's on/off function with an aftermarket temp gauge.
The sender that you cut the wires to sends an 'on' signal to the ecu when the coolant temp is over 59*F. Sec 4B, p. of the 85 FSM.
If you don't have a copy of the FSM, download it from the link in my sig line.
