Question secondary temp gauge, please help

Due to a chronic case of paranoria, and the fact the last car i had is now knocking like hell, i want to install a secondary temp gauge. I have the aftermarket gauge out of my old car ( a 1978 Pontiac station wagon), it is electric. Any ideas on how to hook it up to my car and still preserve the function of the factory temp gague? Thanks

One more thing, did a 1980 rx-7 have a speedo that went up to 120 mph?

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR..

Get a "REAL" aftermarket temp sensor.. don't waste time trying to fudge with that setup.

You'll need to install the temp sensor that comes with the gauge. Tap it into the thermostat housing and leave the original in place. Then you'll have both.

I'm going to disconnect the factory one in my car and install an Autometer water temp gauge. I'll install it's sensor where the original is 'cause I'm not interested in keeping the factory one.

Hope that helps.

See ya,
Christian.

I'd reconsider that. The best place for the sensor is in the thermostat housing so you get a true indication of the water temp. as it leaves the engine.

Oops, sorry!

I did actually mean to put it in the thermostat housing. There are two sensors in my housing already. 1 must be the sensor for the Microtech and the other I thought was the gauge sensor. My bad, I'm still learning you know.

Thanks for the clarification though, I'm off to order my gauge today.

See ya.

No worries mate. The other sensor in the thermostat housing is actually for the choke on the stock carby so you can probably take that out. The stock gauge sensor is down under the oil filter right next to the oil pressure sensor.

Ah, the choke. I was under the dash soldering my turbo timer wiring so it actually works (the installer wrapped it around the correct wire and then taped it ), when i found the choke stuffed up under there. I pulled it out and found the cable was cut in the engine bay and left to dangle.

The workshop that did the work doesn't have a very good rep - I'm starting to see why!

Anyway... thanks for the info, I'll probably replace the choke sensor then as it's completely useless. Although I did want to hide the sensor under the piping for a cleaner look. Oh well. The gauge is ordered and should arrive today or tomorrow so I won't even look at it again until the weekend.
