Seat Covers

Has anyone found decent looking, cheap seat covers that fit first generation seats? Most of the ones I've seen look like they would fit too loosely around the head rest.

I don't know about cheap, but Victoria British carries seat covers designed for the 1st gen's. They run about $300 and I think appear like factory replacement- however I've not seen them in person.

I just pulled an old VB catalog..It gives the following description:

"Reupholstery Seat Kits Require No Sewing...Yes! You Can Do-It-Yourself!"

Kits are exactly cut, fully foamed (3/4" thick) and completely sewn to the exact dimensions of the factory seat. Exclusive fastening guide for easy positioning and stretching the kit on the seat frame for a perfectly taught. wrinkle-free fit"

High Back seat kits are $249.95 and Low back are $299.95
If you have a head rest (like my 85 GSL does) It would run ya $329.95.

They come in Black, Red, Rust and Tan.

Sounds like a kit to 'sorta' reupholster them yourself (but certainly sounds like a fancy seat cover to me). I'm with you.. I'd get it professionally done for about the same price.

I had my seat recovered recently at a upper line shop and it ran about $300.

Do mess with the kits or the seat covers. Suck it up and pay the $300 and have then done professionally!

$300 bucks isn't bad at all, and your interior will look 100X better, well worth it, my dads were done awhile ago (for free, traded some window tint to the upholstery guy)

I'd love to get the $300 Victoria British covers but with two kids in college my budget is more in line with $30 Walmart covers. So has anyone found a good cheap seat cover that fits? (preferable without flowers dirty86)

With some basic sewing skills (wife comes in handy), you can modify walmart seat covers to fit nicely. Thats what I am doing to my Hotwheels covers.

You could also consider a seat swap. Miata seats fit with some fabrication. You may find a pair 4 cheap somewhere that may just need a little cleaning. Other than that I would guess any seat cover designed for your style of seat (highback,lowback or headrest style) would work with a little tuck and sew. Velcro tape may work as well.

u can get the mazdaspeed radcing style seats for less than it would cost to reupholster i think. I dunno wat would look better thou.

I just threw some of wal-mart's black and grey "R" Racing seat covers on.... looked a little rice, but kept all the orange bits of foam off of my clothing from the deteriorating seats. They fit pretty well actually, and made it look like I just had high-back seats instead of seats with headrests (I have '83 Cloth seats in my '79).
