Question In search of Nikki carb wizard!

Hello all,

So the beginning of the this story starts with me going to a vintage road race event and running into a few 1st gen racers. I was talking to them for a while and one guy said he sent out his factory carb to a guy (name might have started with Yar?) that makes the stock carb run great for racing. I am not sure what all the guy does to the carb and sadly I forgot the name the racer gave me. So I am wondering if anyone out there knows of some carb rebuilders that fit that profile? I wish I could be more help with giving you details but I didn't get much info from him

Any leads would be great! Thank you in advance.

You are probably talking about "Yaw".

I had a chance to get my hands on one of his carbs a couple years ago and really didn't like it at all. It was a very poorly modded carb and didn't make very much power even though it had all of his bells and whistles. There were also some pretty apparent mistakes Mr Yaw made on this particular carb indicating that his quality control had really gone downhill. I think he was overworked. But despite that, the rest of the carb was at a very low standard that would have been difficult to tune for anyone. Believe me, I tried. I had to dump several of his mods and try to work with what was there. The end result was just not very good. It was a real piece of "work" and I can't recommend any Yaw carbs to anyone these days.

So... what do you have in mind?

I have seen some great stuff come from Paul Yaw's shop and I've seen and am currently working on some hot garbage. I still like his injectors. YMMV.

Well currently I have "basically" a stock 12A (header exhaust and minus polution stuff) with the stock carb on it. I could never get it to idle lower than say 1500. I didn't know what exactly Mr Yaw did to the carbs or even how much or how good things were I just wanted to track him down. My car is still going to be "streetable" but mostly for autox and track days so I am leaning towards more of a performance carb. I have always thought a Holley was the way to go etc but then I heard this road racer praise Yaw carbs so I thought I would research it some.

Thanks to you both for leading me to him. If you have any pictures or extended stories I would gladly listen as you seem to have some first hand experience with his carbs. Like I said I don't know what all he does to one but this racer guy I meet was telling me how good they are.

He's been off the site, or at least not posting for about 6 years now, but Sterling was the guy to talk to about Nikki carburetors "back in the day." Might be worth a PM to him to find out if he can be talked into one more hipo rebuild.

Depends on what you are after and where you will be running it. My Yaw carb was a good carb. Had many lap records and a couple of ARRC wins. The Sterling was a nice carb but is not SCCA legal.

I run autocross some but mainly use my RX7 for track days. I had Jeff20B build a carb for me and I have been quite pleased. Car is a 12A stock port with RB streetport exhaust (twin pipes to muffler), car idles at 800rpms rock solid. Has rat nest delete also. I have talked to people who had Yaw carb and they were pleased with them. But I can say the same about my Jeff20B carb.
