Drive less.

Rotaries are not known for their astounding gas mileage. I also heard that if you shift low, it gets worse gas mileage than shifting around 3-4k, don't know if that is true or not. Also, full exhaust gets you better MPG, if you can keep your foot out of it.

I get about 15-18mpg in daily driving (zero freeway, lots of stop lights) around town. 24-27mpg on the freeway exclusively. 19-21mpg when towing my tire/tool trailer on the freeway.

For improving gas mileage, start with the simple stuff.

(1) Increase your tire pressure (I run 38psi)
(2) New air filter
(3) Open exhaust (I have a full RB exhaust)
(4) Mazda OEM distributor cap & rotor (real brass contacts, unlike the crappy aftermarket aluminum ones)
(5) Good Spark Plugs (I use RX-8 plugs, but it's not necessary...just FRESH plugs)
(6) Regular oil and gear lube changes.

There are other things, but that is a good place to start. I also run a set of 6-port radiused inserts and the induction system has been gone through.

My gas mileage is pretty much the same as Blake's for the same conditions. Usually, since I live near a by-pass, my mileage always averages at 24.3mpg.

1. K&N air filter (Preferable to keep it outside of the engine bay. ReSpeed has a bracket for the radiator support to accommodate intake tubing. Do a search on how to do a cold air intake. It's worth it.)
2. SeaFoam every 1/4 or 1/8 tank of gas to clean it out.
3. Keep steady [read: smooth] acceleration. There is such a thing as pumping loss. When you accelerate, keep it good and strong (but no jackrabbit take off) and shift around 2500 (2000 when going into 5th). Does good for me.
4. Use a high-quality oil and filter. (There are numerous threads regarding what kind of oil. Don't even start another one of these. )
5. If possible, put synthetic transmission gear oil and differential oil in.
6. Maintain tune-up maintenance.
