Screeching sound!
Screeching sound!
So, I have a 85 Gsl-Se that i've been working on for a while and haven't gotten around to working on it since i don't have the parts right now to replace somethings. The engine seems to run just fine when i drive it no problem. So i started the puppy up the otherday to just get rid of that carbon build up and when i hit 5 1/2 grand (5000 RPM) i keep hearing a screeching noise. I dont know if it's the belt but if you could please reply back to me with some info it would be much appreciated! Thanks!!!

Belt tension would be the most obvious, yeah; or an old, hard belt that's getting ready to fail, even though tensioned right.
Next down would be a bearing somewhere like in the air pump or alternator.

Well i checked all the belts and they aren't at all to tight not to mention there is one old belt that may need to be replaced. On the other hand I just got a new altenator for this puppy 3 months ago and haven't really driven the guy over 30 miles! So i doubt its the altenator unless it needs to be broken in? Wheres the air pump?

Air pump is down low on the passenger side.
If you don't have stock exhaust/smog equipment, it's probably not there any more, which would raise another issue:
When the air pump is removed, it can let the water pump belt slip, due to reduced contact area. Search "pineapple belt" for more info.

you dont really have to "break in " an alternator. as mentioned, replace the belts. hardened belts can slip and squeal and old belts that are stretched will completely lose all useful tension. if you have a catylitic converter left on your 7, you will want the airpump in place. if the air pump is disconnected your cat will melt internally...
A good way to test if it's the belts is hit them with some belt dressing. Really lather it on. If it IS on the the belts, the screech should go away for a little while (unless it's really cold.)

I had an old nissan that squealled on brand new belts when it was cold because the pullys. And I did note it was to test, not to solve the problem, you never want to have a belt snap on you.
