The headliner in my 83 is sagging. It is still in good shape however. Can I just use some of that 3m spray adhesive to glue it back in place or is there a better product for this? Thanks in advance
Hey, I just used some of that 3M stuff the other day when I glued the carpet down in my amp box for my custom install, but I did notice that it says its NOT for use on car headliners right on the can...However, I feel that with the way it held the carpet I was working with, I would probably use it anyway. Im assuming they only tell you not to use it because of its "lack of adhesion", but it seems good enough to me, and if its not, you have a whole can and you can just spray again
. Also I noticed in the VB catalog, that they sell some sort of spray adhesive too. You could check that out also (probably basically the same stuff though). Also, just go to a craft store and ask them. They get all kinds of weird questions like that, and they would know what each product they sell would be good for.

I beleive you need to use Super 85 not Super 77. 77 is thin and will soak through the material. Thats why it says on the can not to use on headliners...
Of course I use it on grill cloth, just spray it on and let it sit a while before sticking the headliner material to it..
And the headliner is hanging in a Rx-7? I dont think I have ever seen that...

Ive seen them in a junkyard where they have been sitting for years and they arent sagging. I even seen ones that went off in the river, and then dried out and the headliner is still there
I mean they were pretty tough..

Thanks 85rx7gs, I'd appreciate that. I too have seen wrecks with the headliner still in good shape so I guess it's bad luck on my part. Anyway thanks for the info.
i think you have an aftermarket headliner,
do you have an aftermarket sunroof by any chance?
or are there any signs of work done on your sunroof?
does your headliner look like its fabric?
or does it look like that great stuff foam stuff?

On everyone i have had, the material is glued on the fiberboard.. But never had the problem with one sagging, only thing I ever seen was some of the older ones with Vinyl or whatever it was starting to roll a little from the edges...

No sunroof, my car is an "S". I know for a fact that it is the original headliner. The guy I bought the car from had every receit for the car and told me everything (which wasn't much) that had been done to the car. The headliner is a vinyl like material that is smooth. Definatly not carpet. The vinyl part is not sagging, the whole thing cardboard backer and all is sagging. How is the cardboard attached to the roof? Is it just glued right to the metal or what?
oh thats right you have an 83,
forgot thats still the older interior.
if i had batts id take some digi pics of my headliner and show you what the later 1st gen headliners look like.
its really hard to explain but am quite sure there one piece,if not then i dont think it is possible to seperate the pieces that there constructed of.
btw what is an s series?
gs?

on my 82, the headliner is held in by plastic upholstery "plugs" (for lack of a better term). the head of the plug kinda looks like pac-man and is inserted into a slot in the fiberboard of the headliner. then it's pushed into the roof into the corresponding holes. sorta like how our door panels are held on, but with plastic retaining clips instead of metal. and about the 3M adhesive.... i don't recall the number, but you'll know you've got the right one if the spray shoots out like a web, not a mist. then again, i don't think you'll need it once you fasten those clips.

v8kilr: the "S" is the base model, has power nothing, steel 13 in wheels (at least on mine) no sunroof, am/fm radio, no casette (that's all been upgraded by me) and has an open diff with drum rears. GS has a few more things like power mirrors and power hatch release, along with the 13 in alloy "4 spoke" (for lack of a better description) wheels. I think my headliner is one piece but could be wrong.
Silly boys. Use 3M double sticky back tape. You have to support the area for a while and you can't do it on a cold day. The hard part is getting the damn tape where you want it without loosening other stuff. Worked ok on my 83. Good luck.
No luck with my 'fellow associates' at The Depot. They had no clue as to what I was talking about. I did see some 3M double sided tape that you might want to try - this stuff sticks to everything, so be careful!
I got a really big woody and sat there thinking of Pamela Anderson for an hour. Kept it nice and snug. Actually I use a piece of 2x4 and padded each end with cardboard so as to keep it snug and not mar the surface. Put it on warm so it sticks, and remove any old crud on the surface if possible.
