There's only one way to really find out what an amp's thermal tolerance limit is before the relays shut it down and that's to just go ahead and do it, just don't tie everything down. Set it all up when you have a weekend open and test the amp in the enclosed space. You might want to seriously think about putting some kind of fine mesh grill that will allow the lid to provide ventilation. Each amp is different in its tolerance and that also varies with the load it is enduring from whatever it is you're trying to power with the amp. Mike might have some real world examples that could answer this more thoroughly. I personally don't like the idea unless some kind of push/pull fan set up was involved...

I have 2 amps mounted inside my subbox which has some carpet in there to soften any bumps. The amps only over heat on long trips when really being pushed but im pretty sure that if i removed the carpet and didn't have the amps ontop of each other it wouldn't get too hot. They are ontop of each other due to limited space.

Biggest danger of mounting an amp in the rear hatch is some fool doing a smash-and-grab...

The amp in the back of the passenger seat has a max output of 200 watts and it's always at the max and it never got hot.. sometimes when it's really hot in the car I open up the windows(well it's pretty obvious too..) but don't worry bout your amp it won't get too hot(remember that a lot of people put their amps in their trunk and that gets really hot in the summer so don't worry bout it..

my amp is in the driver side compartment, It was there all summer and it never shut off so unless your running an insanly high output amp it should be fine.
