Trying to make a like new tranny for my SA22. Got all the bearings, seals and gaskets. Found a new 1-2 shift fork. Built up the wear surfaces on the 3-4 shift fork.

Can't find new reverse gear or reverse/5th shift sleeve. (part#s 8012-17-302 & 310) Can gears be repaired? If so by whom? Any recommendations appreciated.

Have you checked with Mazda? I know that when I recently rebuilt my SA trans the only source for the mainshaft nut was the dealer, kinda surprised me that they still have the parts, but these transmissions share a lot of parts with each other, maybe that is why they are still availible from the dealer. If you have no luck there then I would suggest finding a doner trans. I dont think the gears can be repaired. I believe they are hardened in such a way that would make repair difficult or impossible.

Noticed your Collin Chapman quote. I've been a huge fan of his for most of my 50+ years. Until a couple weeks ago. I watched a special on F1 in the 1960s called something like "the deadly years". Evidently he took that quote to extremes. His cars were so light they were death traps even in "mild" crashes. He was also one of the builders who resisted safety measures the most vigourously. At least one great driver and fantastic human being, Jim Clarke, died in his race cars. That revelation was a real let down for me. I expected it of Enzo Ferrari but not Collin Chapman.

up until recently the trans parts were dealer only. Mazda has a transmission plant, so i believe most of the parts are actually made in house, which is unusual for a transmission.

since these transmissions were also used by ford, i'd say its possible that ford might have it too, although in my experience ford stocks nothing, and the ford people buy from mazda.

Depends on what is wrong. Gears are heatreated to be fairly hard. Normally they are hard enough to where they break instead of deform or wear out so there isn't many cases where a repair is suitable. Given the work to just get at them, they are usually more of a replacement item. However, most machine shops should be able to accomplish minor repairs. Gear cutting is somewhat of a speciality, but a journeyman Machinist or Toolmaker has the knowlegde to repair, fix or make one.

Betting that even tho you might have to buy a complete kit, it will be w-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-y less than even SOME pieces from Mazda.

AND - note there are 2 kits, one having more stuff (gears, syncros I think) than the other.

If you haven't already got it Mazda printed a TRANSMISSION-specific service manual for the SA RX, which will be worth hunting down. See them regularly on ebay...

the rebuild kit with the big bearing was intially ordered by mistake and had the wrong synchros so re-ordered the other one .

all three shift forks were bought seperately and new from mazda last spring . took awhile to get the 3rd fork

I also found new shift forks for sale on ebay but didnt buy them after they were found at mazda, might be worth checking

peepers has a new bearing/ synchros/sleeves/forks build and its nice. you notice the quiet and smooth trans even when the engine is 105db

Drivetrain is where I got my stuff from and I do not beleieve they have the gears. As I understand it one kit has syncros and the other does not.

True, there are 2 versions of the Kit, the pricer one includes the syncros. So maybe you need the gears as a separate order?

Now, I have looked closely and there are TWO versions of the same Kit_s_!
One has a 20.5mm counter-shaft front double ball bearing, the other a 15mm single ball bearing:

So how the f$%^&k do we figure which is needed?? Nothing I find in the Parts manual shows a date/production number change with a diff PN for the bearing. Caveat: the bearings in the parts manual are ALL just labeled "bearing" so its guess-work (for me) which one is the actual bearing, but I went thru all the part nos and could find no alternate PNs for any bearing based on production date or chassis numbers. damn.

i haven't looked, but the change happens AFTER the cars are in service, there are a bunch of service bulletins for different bearings, and i'm pretty sure if you put the number from the SA parts catalog into the Mazda computer it will supersede a couple of times.

that being said i really don't recall a DOUBLE row ball front counter shaft bearing, however the CENTER countershaft bearing changes from a double row ball bearing to a single roller bearing, in mid 87, and the width is different so you need the new bearing (which usually isn't in the aftermarket kit) and a spacer.

Where were you three weeks ago when I was rebuilding my SA trans with only the FSM, which is light on transmission rebuild ino!

Oh well, I have just ordered one I found on Ebay so I can read it and see what I did wrong.

They also put out seperate rear diff & air conditioning system manuals. A good libary is an important asset for long term owership.
