Carfax says my VIn shoudl be 17 characters but i only have 11 on the title and everything. Is there a way i can check it?

 

i think cars before 80 ARE suppose to have shorter VIN's..

No there's not.

The 17-digit standardized VIN was instituded around '78 or so and was mandatory by '81.

Before that, manufacturers could put together any mishmash of numbers and letters (except no letter I and no letter O) and call it a VIN.

 

so how does he check it?

 

He could go down to the local DMV and pay them to do a check.

 

What's the purpose of checking it?
