Check to make sure that your ground cable is clean and tight. Also the connections at the starter are tight.

If all of those are good check the connections at the battery for cleanliness and that they are tight.
Also make sure your battery is not discharged or defective.

yeah i agree with rx7doctor, sounds just like my 79. heck for a while i could drive it and park, and when i came back it acted dead, i just wiggled the terminals and it cranked. come to find out the battery post did not fit tight so i got these spacers from advance to fill in the gap and put a ton of dielectric grease on there, and also re tightened the wires on the starter, cranks every time.

Since you had to remove the battery cables to do the clutch swap, I would start with those connections. Spray the connectors and surfaces down with brake cleaner to clean the mating surfaces for a good electrical connection.

Yeah, I did a clutch and an engine swap in my '79 and those terminals were awfully finnicy. Any grease or oil contamination and they wouldn't make a consistent connection.

Don't give up on the SA. There aren't many of us left!

Is this a new problem with the trans or did it do this before the clutch replacement?

So was the original problem that you couldn't get the car into gear? Did you check the clutch master cylinder before you did the clutch swap? See how much fluid is in the clutch master cylinder reservior.

ahhh i never checked that. the original problem was. but is most likly what u just said to check.
i just pulled out of the drive way. was heading to my English 102 class. gonna take the high way cuz its faster. and i was in a hurry. i'm at the light to take a left. i put it in first and let off the clutch car dies. i start it back up and put it back in first. goes to do the same thing but i kept it from dieing. same thing happened in second. so i tryed third and it was the only thing there... and neutral was third gear and 4th was third gear too... so yeah.

Well, if it truly is an SA (79 or 80), you will find it easier to replace it with a tranny from the same years. You can make a s2-3 fit, but it requires some effort.

What happens when you push the clutch pedal in? If it goes straigt to the floor with little or no resistance, try pumping the clutch real fast. If pumping the clutch causes it to build pressure, I would say it's more than likely that you've got a bad clutch master or slave cylinder. What you've described doesn't really sound like that is the problem, but you never know.
When I've had my cylinders go out (I've had to replace both), I can't get the car in gear unless the engine is off. Then, if I try to start it, even with the clutch pedal in, the clutch is still engaged and the starter will roll the car.
The clicking when you try to start it sounds like a bad starter, but it would be unlikely that your starter and clutch would go out at the same time. I would look for a bad connection to the starter.
