SA oil cooler vs GSL-SE oil cooler ?

Anyone know what the real differences are in these two FMOC's in size and performance ?

Trying to decide for a T2 swap.

FC too?

Can we add the FC oil cooler to the discussion, too?

For cooling capacity they are all nearly the same. For longevity and less failure rate, go with the FC mod in my writeup.

the CORE size of the GSL-SE cooler and FC coolers are identical. the FC has bigger endtanks slightly, different mounting and the banjo fittings

the FC cooler is WAY easier to find (3 to 1 in my garage!)

i don't have a 79-82 cooler to compare.

That oil cooler will work fine. I just have had way better luck with second gen oil coolers not leaking. That's all.

even the old REPU oil coolers are almost identical to the FC cooler so i have to assume the 1st gens are the same core as well.

true about the 2nd gen oil coolers though. the bosses on them are way more durable and less susceptible to cracking.

I could be wrong, but I thought the SA OC was made for the 12a and the FB/FC was made for the 13b....

Maybe it's time for a oil temp gauge.

The oil cooler cooling capacities are the same regardless. The temp bypass in the SA oil cooler opens a little earlier than the second gens. That means that the SA oil cooler will let oil flow through it at a lower temp. But if it was me, I would do the bypass mod to the oil cooler to let oil flow through it all the time.

Wouldn't that overcool the engine?

the major difference between the SA oil cooler and the SE oil cooler is the spacing and angle of the bungs. the angle is greater for the SE.

Maybe someone can answer this. Can I take a S3 FMOC and use my 12a oil lines to connect it to my motor?

By S3 you are referring to the GSL-SE oil cooiler correct?

S1 & S2 Rx7 had FMOC and S3 had Beehives except the GSLE which had a FMOC

If you want to use A GSL-SE FMOC I believe you will need longer oil lines, so I don't believe your 12 oil lines will work.

No. It will take a little longer for the oil to warm up. Mazda went as far as using a thermal pellet behind the front e-shaft bolt (on S4 and later) to restrict the oil flow and make the oil warm up quicker. I suppose they were trying to accomidate the bust it off and drop in gear crowd. I always let my 7s warm up before they are driven. But hey, I guess that's just me?

I thought the front GSl-SE 13B line going to the front cover was shorter because the engine sits closer to the front.

I replaced the beehive on my 1985 12A with a GSL-SE FMOC. I ordered the RB GSL-SE 13B stainless steal braided lines and found that they where to short. The GSL-SE bungs are at an angle so I ended making my own lines with -10 stainless steal line and added a 45 degree angle connector to the FMOC to compensate for the angle.
