Is the SA/FB a true sports car?

The FB is a sports car.

The FD is THE sports car (The freaking definition of Spartan).

And I think it's still a better sports car than the Corvette.
Besides the FD, how sports cars actually got LIGHTER than their last version? That is my idea of a Spartan sports car.
The Corvette is really more like a two-seat muscle car that can handle because it's got a stiff suspension and giant tires (width-wise)... not because it was designed to be nimble.
Of course, the idea of what a sports car is varies greatly between people... While some people are pretty general (if it was built to be fast, it's a sports car), some people are more so ("must be RWD, two doors, two seats, manual"), and some people are just crazy super-purists (only two-seater purpose-built track cars than can barely clear a speed bump count to them).

If you ever want to see what a real spartan sports car is like, rather than a granny's shopping cart, have a look at the Caterham CSR 260, a development of the Lotus Super 7.
CSR260 Model
ENGINE:
Cosworth 2.3-litre Ford Duratec Max power: 260 bhp
Maximum Speed: 155mph

I love my 7!

well, if we're talking should-be go carts, why not the Ariel Atom.

I love my seven too, but these people who think that 7s are better than the C6 Z06 are incredibly uninformed.
Valkerie, do you live in the U.S? If so, when was the last time you saw someone rolling around in their 2002 FD? Never, why? Because the last year for the American FD was 1995. Even the 02 Spirit R is not even close to the performance of the Z06 and thus your statement is incredibly misinformed.
"The Corvette is really more like a two-seat muscle car that can handle because it's got a stiff suspension and giant tires (width-wise)... not because it was designed to be nimble." You obviously don't know much about the corvette. If it handled so well just because of its wide tires and super stiff suspension, the ride quality would be equivalent to a go-cart. The reason it does not is because of superior chassis rigidity. You don't claim the top time at Nürburgring just by throwing on rock hard springs and huge tires.

Wonder what it would cost to insure?
I would love to see the official's horror when I took an Atom for road registration!
Visited their website. The option list is interesting, I speced out my ideal as a road car and will add it to my birthday list. Unfortunately I am not certain whether my wife will agree inspite of the fact I drove a Lotus 47GT and Super 7 when we met.

And the 2002 FD's performance might not equal the Corvette's, primarly because at the time it was made, Japanese cars were for all practical purposes limited to 280 HP, not to mention the car costs much less than a Corvette (35K brand new compared to 45K+ for a Vette).
I love the Vette (I have since I was a kid...I've been to the plant)... but I'd probably take an FD (a near-new one that is) if I had to actually pay for either one of them.
Or the Atom
Reguardless, a sports car isn't always about pure performance. You could say a Miata or an old Lotus Elan is a purer sports car than the Vette or even the RX-7, and I don't think you'd be wrong... yet both will obviously out perform the Miata or Elan.
Anyway, I think in terms of purity of the RX-7, it goes FD>FB>FC

I'll take a Vipe over the Vette any day. . . but that's not the point
And the FD being lighter than it's previous gen doesn't count. . . the FC was a freakin' PIG!
On that note, I bought an FD today, and I am certain that the FB and the FD are, indeed, both sports cars.

Terrified.
Congratulations, gsterror. I want to buy an FD as well, but everytime I get ready to drop money on a car something comes up.
As far as sports cars go, I would much rather own an FD over any Vette, including the C6 Z06, and nearly every other car on the market as well. I'm too much of a rotary fanatic. The only other cars I would ever really consider buying other than rotary powered ones are Porsche 911's.
As far as the sports car argument, the only thing I really consider a sports car to be is a performance machine of its time. Obviously the SA/FB is underpowered in todays powerful competition, but in its day it wasn't so. I measure performance by not only speed, but handling as well.

It's freaking great. Now I can park my FB and my FD next to my Uncle's FC and have a picture of the whole family!!!
I've driven the 'Vette Z06 (A C5 though) and it's not NEARLY as fun as the FD.

Ok it seems that my druken episode the other day has made alot of confusion. 1:I was drunk 2: Misread info while drunk 3: Being the stuborn drunk I am fought it to the end. ANd I apologize. Without the 7 I wouldnt be where I am today. Now I what I meant about not calling it a sports car is my own opinion(no im not gonna bring the chevette thing back I promise). To me a sports car is something that well. Is extremely fast, handels like its on rails, smells like gas, no comfort options were ever added in any model, over priced over powered, eats gas, kills you when you drive it wrong, and gives an image that you have arrived. Basically a car that i couldnt own if I tried.
Now some said I was an uneducated retard(yep ypur right). And that the onlyy cars I think that think quallfy are like camaros and ****. Not true. My list of favorite sports cars is mainly from the 50s 60s and 70s. A sports car to me is the top of the line what you drooled over as a kid you know the stuff dreams are made of that kinda thing.
Again I apologize about my druken rant. Its basically what happened when I got into a losing battle with makenze71 over something just as meaningless. I was gonna apologize in the accual thread but decided i would just let it die. Hate me if you want. It dont matter to me. just thought I would saty my piece.

I've had like three epiphanies and I was determined to post something inciteful. But now, having read through this entire thread in a single sitting I'm kinda wiped out and I'm not sure I remember quite so clearly. But here it goes.
As far as the intial comment that spawned this thread, about the FD being the first real RX sports car. I don't completely disagree with that, as long as you admend it. Its one of the first Japanese super cars, the same vein as the 300ZX, Supra, NSX. And the first RX that could compete with just about anything foreign or domestic.
And in regaurds to people who run their mouths off in this thread. I have to agree that it substantially reduced the rockin-ness of this thread. Even right now it is, because I'm taking the time out of responding to write this. And it seems to me that they feel that they must enter a pissing contest in public. And I don't know if it is to try and impress, maybe it is the only way they can get it up, or they are in general argumentative ********. Reguardless the site has a PM function where this sort of thing can take place.
And last the SA/FB is a sports car. In its style. In its proportions. In its driving experience. In the very fact it has an unreasonable engine. In that people always try to line-up with me at stop lights. In that I get asked "Is it fast?". And most importantly in that just looking at it makes me want to get in and drive. And never, ever, stop.

Tatterjuice 771: O16581724 525's Civic isn't your everyday ricer Honda. This thing packs a punch; I know, I've seen it. But I'd be down for a road trip to St. Louis. The Stealth needs driven every now and then.
