SA to FB electrical conversion update

Well i am pretty much done with the wiring of the car. I finally got the stereo and electric fan hooked back up. I still have to test the heater and start putting the interior back together. Hopfully a couple more days and the car will be one step closer to getting driven, its been almost 6 months since it has been driven like it should be. I took some pics of the wiring conversion. It still needs some cleaning up and tucked away but for the most part its together. I did the wiring swap to get rid off the patched together sa harnesses, and make it more compatible with the electronic distributor, and also gain the newer style fuse box, and loose all the crappy underhood resistors and relay boxes. So far everything works as far as lights, popups, hatch release, cranks up, idles smooth, fan, stereo, speakers, and other acc. Also with everything out of the way i cleaned the engine the best i could with some mean green and hot water, looks better then before. Well here are some pics.

new fuse box and flasher relays, tight fit on the SA dash

flasher relay another tight one

FB ignition switch, combination switch and dash cluster, had to mod the ignition switch diameter, and comb switch diameter to fit my steering shaft

engine bay overview

engine bay close up, still alittle clustered but should be okay once i put on some loom

i made the air cleaner my self. machined it out of billet aluminum on a 3 axis highspeed milling center and welded the 4 inch aluminum pipe to it then used no-hub rubber plumbing connectors to link the pieces together then to top it all off i added a 4 inch dia cone K&N filter. You can really hear that thing suck down the air. i also made the water temp sender manifold that mounts in the top radiator hose. I could not find one to buy and then the other day i saw where some one posted a link to one, from one of the companies.

As far as how well the elcetrical is going. i have pop up headlights, rear hatch release, glove box lights and a pop up switch, all of which i NEVER HAD. So far so good. everything works, and if it does not work i am making it work one way or another. So far i have tested everything that will be checked at an inspection, and its all good to go. it cranks, idles, revs, and charges all at the same time, NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE EITHER.

Im very pleased with the FB wiring, it is alot more user friendly then the SA. Im no electrican and so far everything has gone together, with the help of Sam(bad83). He helped me get the major wiring figured out and taught me a bit about how things should work.

Tonight i finished hooking up my horns, dash lights and started puting some plastic back in the car. My vaction is over and i have to go back to work tommorow so hopfully in a couple days i should have all the interior back together and i hope to get some road time before the weekend. Once everything is done i will post some more pics and some reviews on the conversion.

I would add the FC under hood fuse box and the negative cable coming off of your battery looks to be too small of a gauge. Other than that, great work.

Well those are the orginal SA battery cables. They are old and also alittle worn out. once everything else is done and proven out i will probably end up puting some new ones on there. Just taking baby steps right now to get it road ready, i have to get it inspected this month. Once that is done i will have another year to play around with it.

Wow. Leave you alone for a couple of days, and you keep on plugging away. Persistint little focker aint you. I'm glad the FB stuff is working out for you. Much easier to work with swapping everything out from a FB, than trying to retro fit it to the SA. I hope to get over there this weekend. Maybe we can see what that streetport has for the turbo FB! Good times. Anyone local wanting to get together on our meet, check out the South East section in the forum. Looking good Robbie!
