Question S5 T2 swap into 85 GSL... Parts Needed Questions...?

Ok, so I'm swapping in a S5 T2 into my 85 gsl and wanted to see if
you guys know of any other parts that I'll need besides what's already on my list...

Here's what I already know I need. Some of which I already have.
I'm getting (Or making my own) aftermarket exhaust/turbo manifold.
And going FMIC.

ECU
AFM
Turbo Pressure Sensor
Injectors
Fuel Rails
LIM
UIM
Throttle Body w/TPS
Flywheel
Clutch & Pressure Plate
Tranny
Custom Driveline
BOV
Wastegate
Fuel Pump (Walbro 255)
Fuel Pressure Regulator (Do I need one of these?)
Wiring Harness

So that's what I know I need, what else am I going to need to make this project work?

I should have all the parts in a few weeks and am hoping to get
everything together and then swap it after I have everything so
that my car is down for the least amount of time!
That's the idea.

Regards,
Orb

Forgot the 3 main things on dropping a 2nd gen motor into a 12a car.

Hint: 12a =/= 13b

First gen front cover (preferably off a GSL SE 13b) and the SE 13's oil pan, also you will need to get the racing beat engine brace or modify the 12a part.
If you are running the stock ecu then no need for a FPR, its built into the secondary rail.
Don't forget the T2 throttle cable, the FB speedo cable will work, also how are you doing yoru fuel system, are you modding the tank to accept an intank FC style pump, or using a surge tank or what?
Don't forget all the stuff the FC's body harness has on it, like coils, fuel pump resistor, main relay etc etc.

I think your better off to modify the stock brace. I used the racing beat piece and it made my engine sit on the motor mount on one side. I had to notch my motor mount to make it work. I have talked with 2 others that had this same problem. I was rather dissapointed that racing beat would sell a piece that needed to be massaged to make work right.

What about an O2 sensor? Do I need one?
And are there any other sensors that I need?

You will need one depending on what computer your running the engine with.

I thought you could use the stock 12a engine brace if you used the 12a front cover for the swap? I always thought you had to use one or the other (modified engine brace or 1st gen front cover), not both?

You need both pieces although you will need to slot the 12a engine brace due to the longer 13b. A GSL-SE front cover is preferred because it has a little indention that can be easily tapped for a oil return line from the turbo.

I'm interested in this swap as well sometime down the line. My question is why swap front covers and why get an SE's oil pan? Pros? Cons? Why is this done? Is there anyway to circumvent this? I know this swap isn't a drop in swap but why have to mod the engine itself? I need this explained to me like I'm 5. Thanks in advance.

heres a write up of the swap if you want. I take no credit for this, a friend wrote it to me in an email. i thought it was good.

So there are two ways to do a TII swap from a 12a first gen RX7. The first one is to remove the 12a from the vehicle of course, remove the front housing from the original engine there and keep it. Next take your TII (of whatever series you prefer, although im an S5 guy myself for various reasons) remove the front housing from it and replace it with the 12a front housing you just removed. The purpose of this is to allow you to reuse the motor mounts on the 12a motor that line up with the mounts on your crossmember in the vehicle. It also allows you to reuse the stock transmission crossmember as well. Unfortunately however, you do have to purchase a modified oil pan to clear front cross member. This is orderable from a number of manufacturers online, and as you can see, for this type of swap its simply a matter of bolts and gaskets so far. Quite easy. It gets just a little more difficult doing the wiring, but as long as you’ve purchased a 13b with an uncut wiring harness, it fairly clear cut in that regard. There are a few relays and resistors necessary to make things work with the factory gauges and that, but with the support available online, its possible to get done painlessly. You can reuse the original 1984 rack and pinion and steering column in this case, and because its not a power system, can remove the power steering pump from the TII (horsepower gain!). The same is true of the brakes, simply a matter of swapping some vacuum lines to get it back to its former glory. The radiator of course will need to be reconnected with modified hoses, and I recommend a front mount intercooler(your hood won’t close on the old top mounts). The last step is a custom drive shaft, which is relatively cheap from many shops in town here. If you do the research and collect parts that are necessary for a little while, you can probably take two weeks of straight work and have this swap complete and car back on the road.

ok, i've finally come the end of a similar project, and i tell you, there are ALOT of extra bits!! for the engine, need a 12a front cover,
modd the engine mount,
13b sump,
oil cooler lines to suit,
coils and leads and new plugs
nice big/recored radiator,
FPR if not using stock fuel rails/injectors,
all the fittings/hose clamps for the fuel system and coolant hoses
clutch/flywheel, modded driveshaft to suit,
air filter
wiring/sensors/adapters/guages you might want to run
ummm...
mounts for fuel pump

if you want have a look at my write up, search my user name, or go here http://www.rotahavik.co.nz/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=23245

I have also done all the brakes and suspension, as well as a diff upgrade.
Not that hard, but there is always other little stuff that you WILL need that you won't have thought of.

Enjoy!!
