Yea it goes way up there. Power windows go up fast, lights are very bright etc. I heard that its supposed to be @ 18v. So if its over charging do a get a refund? (j/k) Seriously though, does this suggest that I have a bad alternator?

A bad sensing wire probably. Or a bad alternator. Have it tested.

Wacky is correct. You should be around 13-14v. It sounds like a bad voltage regulator (this is assuming that it is conneted correctly). There usually is a sticker on the alt the shows which terminal is L and which is S. If you have no power to S, the alt will overcharge (same reason as why putting switch 12v to the S terminal will drain your battery when the car is off). Now, if it is connected wrong, that could explain the short. When the car starts, the alt grounds the L terminal, which shuts off the idiot lights. If you have power there, it will short out. Hopefully nothing is damaged. If you are sure it is wired correctly, take the alt to autozone, napa, or whatever and get it tested.

I was in France for a year. Been back for quite a while now. Just been busy with work and buying/working on a house and haven't had much time for the forums or the 7. I am going back over to France in another week or 2, but that will only be short duration (2 weeks).

Good luck!
