The next lethal combination: women, cell phones, and full-size SUVs. Don't get me started on this tangent...

pjr - are you saying you JUST got nailed? Good to hear you were able to walk away from it whether it just happened or not, but my condolences on the loss of your car just the same

Thanks for the kind words, but it happened in August 1986 to my then 22-month-old 1985 S. Broke my heart.

I walked away from another one three years earlier. A 16 year old made a left in front of me as I was going thru an intersection. Never had a chance to react at all, never even touched the brakes. I nailed him direct broadside at 45 mph, full strength.

I was driving a 1982 Jetta (don't say a word please). Anyhow, at the time the Jetta had a passive restraint belt system. I didn't have a scratch. My car was scrap. Front was crumpled to the firewall.

Ironically, the kid had only drobe about a 1/2 mile.. he was picking up his car from the auto body shop after a major accident repair.

I happen to like Jettas, actually. Especially the direct injection diesels

I don't like the passive restraint belts in 80's American spec cars - I mean, what's so difficult about using a seat belt? (rhetorical question, directed @ no one in particular)

Mine was a 1st Gen Jetta. Kinda dorky, like a VW Rabbit with a trunk, and in a strange cream-tan color. Ugh...

Well, in my case, being young and invinible, I was unlikely to wear my belt. Therefore, if it wasn't for the system, I wouldn't be here.

approx 10,000 rpm's ... thats what i estimate. when i asked him he responded " i was driving, as fast as it would go!"
No way, not even close. I have 4.44 gears with 13/60 tires and it's only pulling a bit under 7000rpm at 130mph.

A tire's circumference increases at speed, so a measurement from a company spec sheet or a measurement taken from a static tire can't be used to figure engine speed when the vehicle is at higher speeds. Only an onboard box taking sensor readings off of the front pulley should really be trusted in extreme situations like that. Certainly not the factory tach or even an aftermarket tach...

I seen one that was way worse than that, it was a 85 Se , hit by a train and rolled several times down the track via the train pushing it...

There might have been 1 brake rotor salvagable in it, and that was it...

I dont think anyone walked out of this car, there was blood everywhere in it ... Pretty nasty...

Kinda like that early 90's sopmething model mr2 I seen once, hit a concrete embankment at 90 mph, 3 girsl in the front and no one walked out of it

when it got hit by the train, was there people inside??? if there was did they live??? blood everywhere? i think they would have had time to get out of the car if it stalled on the tracks?..., or did they cross the tracks just as the train was crossing?? either way , that sucks!
