That's horrible! I feel his pain! Two years ago I lost control of my 98 TransAm in the rain. I was even doing about 5-10 under the limit but I suppose it doesn't help much to run nitto 555r's on the rear in wet conditions. You guys are a helluva lot nicer than the fbodie guys where when I wrecked my car. A lot of them gave me a lot of crap for it. If I were 40 years old instead of 19 at the time I'm sure that things would have been different!

I think is is completly stupid to have gobs of power and not upgrade the suspension. The origional suspension was designed to handel 100hp, and not a whole hell of alot more. To me the first and most important thing is the upgrade the suspension and tires before dumping a bunch of power in it....

Im really sorry to see this... The 2 people are extremely lucky!!
Poor Rex

The ******* is lucky that he didn't main or kill himself or some innocent person.

Just because a car CAN go fast does it mean that you MUST drive it fast. I will bet that he's never been on a track, never been in a high perfromance driving school, and doesn't even understand how to pull the tail-happy first gen out of a spin.

This, my friends, is an example of pure stupidity. He is So fortunate that the only loss of life was that of a good first gen Rex. Sorry to be so harsh, but this really hits a nerve with me.

The next time he may be sprouting weeds from 6 feet under...

Does the fact that a stoned jackass is projecting a 2500 lb 130 mph missile through local streets without the driving skills and sobriety to control it coherence make anyone uneasy?

Ofcourse remove the stoned and lack of sobriety and you discribe most people? Lack of driving skills scare me the most. Ofcourse accidents can and DO happen to anyone.

Yes, accidents happen. I've hed them.

But non-sobriety, 130 mph, and defient skills, when combined, greatly increase the chance of a hoorific accident. And these three contributers, placed together, are highly lethal. Don't see too many 130 mph drunks winning on the CART circuit.

On the other hand, look at what happened to the Moroso kid in NASCAR, who was a seasoned driver...

Can't remember Daddy's name (Dick Moroso?), but he started and is still the owner of Moroso, Inc., the speed parts company. He had enough money to put his boy, Rob Moroso, in the Busch series. Rob did very good and was ready to step up into the Winston Cup Series when his bad ways caught up to him. He felt that as a race driver with years under his belt, he could drink and drive unlike us mere mortals who die and kill every day doing so. He was 19 and died as a result of a single car accident when he lost control of his civilian car somewhere out in the boonies, much like these two very lucky fellows...
I cast no stones, however, as I am guilty as those two were regarding sobriety, not the hooch. I've since stopped drinking and driving, but not before a nice 70 1/2 Firebird, a '68 Firebird plus my nice '79 RX-7 paid the ultimate price for my folly...

and they say little forgein cars arnt safe. if someone can get only minor injuries from a crash at 130, come on, something has to be said on how much better other countries can design cars.

A lack of sobriety enhances courage but reduces control and reaction time.

You can go back 2 generations and list famous people killed by driving at excessive speed with un-excessive skills. James Dean (50's), Ernie Kovacs (60's), Harry Chapin (70's)... The Lions had a rookie linebacker who was driving his mercedes like an *** and killed two people (late 80's)... and more recently a KC Chief linebacker and a few NBA players killed while racing at over 100mph (90's).

If you don't have training and experience at that rate of speed, get the skills and experience required. Otherwise, you're at risk to kill yourself, innocent by-standers, and cherished passengers. History proves it over and over again.

I will say that the 1st Gen RX-7 may be the safest small car ever made. I got just totally nailed at 50 mph by a off-duty cop doing 50 mph downhill; ripped the front fender right off the car and tossed it 50 feet. I had a slight abrasion on my left arm and a minor bump on the left side of my head.... that's it. And I was NOT wearing my seat belt.

The point the Rob Moroso story illuminates is this, however....even with the skills and ability to travel at 180 mph, you risk everyone's life around you if you're not sober. At least at the race track, you've got a cage and 30 or so drivers around you voluntarily sharing the racing risk. Out on civvie streets, no one wants to share the road with a judgment-impaired, speeding, non-turn signal-using, wreckless moron. And judgment can be impaired by drinking, smoking, main-lining or using the damn cell phone, hands-free or not...ah, but we're there nonetheless...
