rx7 fb old school looks nice

Recently i've gained an intrest in the fb rx7 and very soon i will be purchasing a differnt car then the one i have now and its so hard for me to decide which one i want i am constantly changing my mind..

Here is what i want:

A fairly reliable car, that i can service, ( i can learn, and i will surely take care of it)
An "Ok" gas mileage ( which i hear it can get if tuned properly and what not)
A fast fun sports car that can be used for just messin' around and some real hard core racing as well as DRIFTING
now i've never seen anyone drift a FB is there a reason for that?

and lastly it must have a backseat even a very very small back seat, i only drive the kid-o's around anway.

Any feed back appreciated after anwsering some of the questions i'll look around on
craigslist put some links up tell me what you guys think

you'll likely have to scrounge a JDM back seat from somewhere and install it, but you likely won't be able to fit a child's safety seat back there. And if they're too big to need a safety seat, they're probably too big to fit anyhow.

I have my own opinions on why FB drivers rarely use them for drifting, but I'll keep 'em to myself for now

Yes these cars can be reliable as long as you take care of them just like any other car
Gas milleage will depend alot on the driver and engine you get ... but around 20mpg

Fast fun sports car you're got that one right dead on .. and drifting ... its been done just search in this forum and you'll see them ... its not the best platform to drift in hence not seeing too many ...Second and third gen are mostly seen in that seen mostly due to more parts available for those cars, along with the IRS (Idipendant Rear suspension) on those cars, but if you get a GSL or GSL-Se which both came stock with limited slip differentials are just as fun too .

If your kids have no legs, they might fit in the rear seats. At 5'10" with the amount I slide the front seat back, I can barely fit a spare jug of Anti-Freeze in between the rear seats and front seat. My Corgi(short small dog) can't even fit in the back seat comfortably.

If you want pictures let me know and I'll see if I can get one tonite.

Yeah pics would be nice!

I'm only allowed to have one person in the car at a time for now anway..
really dumb rule.
untill 6 months..
but anyway i've got about 2thousand saved up, and i'm gonna sell my other car..
so i should have enough money for the car and some extra.

You could go my route with a rotary powered Datsun 510. They came with a back seat standard they are nimble, light, have independant rear suspension, and best of all they are smog exempt. I have no trouble getting sideways, and last week I saw one with a child sitting comfortably in the back seat. The only difference is that you have to make the rotary fit which is quite a project in itself.

i dont know why people think fb's dont make good "drifting" cars. my last car was a 240sx and before that 85 celica. as far as getting sideways the fb does it better then the 240 in my books.

That back seat looks big enough.
My friend has a prelude its just about the same size, when i was much smaller about 5'0 had a huge growth spurt and am now about 6'1
anyway when i was much smaller, MAN I WAS SQUISHED back there..
But still, my friends can live with no blood circulating to their legs for a while.

I also love the fact that when you race someone an in fb they are like W-T-F was that
;P and thats allways great.

In terms of looks i don't like the back end as much because its more oval-y for me, but still i love the car none the less, the back i can live with just not as coupe-ish as i like, still love it though.

And as for drifing, if you say its easier to get side ways then a 240, then i am defintly all for it..
All you see drifing is 240's s13 s14 couple s2k's barely any rx7s i see
ae86, ALL THE TIME.

and so it could make a good drifting car you say? well thats awesome!
being original is defintly something i wanna do..
rx7 fb drifting, heh that'll be awesome..

i'm no ricer, but you know the drifintg look the really low, the off set wheels ( some kind of camber adjustments, i'm not sure what they do.. i think its like 3.5 front 4.5 rear and it makes it look REALLY cool)
keep it stock looking just some cool wheels.

anyway any pictures of a fb drifting?
or the fb style drift-car-look?

thanks for the comments too guys!

Also there is a modded 12a 1985 rx7 fb in my area

how does the 12a perform?
also i hear the fb comes stock with an LSD
true?

get a GSL SE and you get more hospower and the limited slip and i drift mine once in a while more just let the *** kick out around a corner and it does it just fine plus you can upgrade it more and the car is a few years newer.

YEAH the one in my area is the 85 rx7.
with a modded 12a

I don't know, I might want to get it but, the modifications might be hard to find, or to expensive.

I really just want to lower it..
and the 12a comes stock with a turbo?

I believe it was a Canada option, or rather everywhere else but the USA.

I once thought I couldn't break the rear end out on my SE and just kept going faster and faster on those left hand turns and one time, it chirped out a couple of inches at the end on a hard yank to make the turn (poor apex on my part). It was hard to tell as I felt it, but didn't have to do anything different to make the turn.

the first gens only came stock with a turbo in japan. If you're looking for a turbo, you might want to look into a TII Rx-7 from '86-'91

My only problem is
gas mileage..

And another question

someone on the forum converted the 1st gen into a fd body, which is really amazing..
I'd like to do something simmilar to that, but just to the tail lights
is there any information on that?

The backseat was not an option in the USA, however there were several companies, one being "Pacific" which would install an aftermarket backseat. Pacific was also known for the Turbo kits they offered for the SA/FB during the 80's as well as their Pacific Widebody, which is essentially the same as the current Mariah Widebody.

But there were other companies that installed them. They werent very popular, obviously because there were other cars in the same price range that offered comparable performance and actually came with a 2+2 option. And anyone who has sat in ANY Rx-7 (I own a second gen that is a 2+2, bought it this weekend!!!) with a back seat know that there is NO ROOM WHATSOEVER FOR ANY LIVING BEING!!! I also happen to own a 1990 Honda Prelude SI, its backseat is enormous when compared to an Rx-7 back seat.

Anyway, the 12A is a good little engine, if your goal is gobs and gobs of unrealistic power. You may opt for a GSL-SE with a 13B. Turbo, well those were never offered in USDM Rx-7s until the TII, not that you cant add one. Drifting..... eh, Well lets just say I wont go there.

they do drift very well. there are just not that many of them out there because it costs more money then it does to just buy a 2nd gen that has the turbo motor already in it.
