Pace Setter Exhaust...Any Good?

A guy on a local car forum must have read somewhere that I own a first gen. RX-7, because he sent me a PM saying that his father has numerous first gen. parts cars. He also mentioned that he has a Pace Setter exhaust for sale. He didnt give me a price yet, but my current exhaust is pretty poppy, the guy who owned the car before me removed the cat, and put a Cherrybomb Turbo muffler on it, and the piping is starting to look pretty ripe in areas. I was on Pace Setters site, and they don't look like they're very high quality systems. Would I be better off buying this sytem, or going to a shop, and having them fab me one with a good Magnaflow muffler?

Back when I was a poor college student, I bought one for my 83 GSL... worked fine, and wasn't as bad as alot of people might say... decent sound and lasted the three years I owned the car. Looked pretty nice with the chrome tips.

Now that I could do it again, I'd weld one up out of 2 1/4" stainless, a chambered resonator, and a Magnaflow or similar muffler and some nice resonated tips. I'm still poor, I just have more tools/skills now!

Any more than that and you can have a backwoods muffler shop do a custom for you...

I would say no more than $150 for a good used system. As mentioned, its not a great system, but if you just need to find a good replacement for a rusted out stock one, its a good replacement. By far the best according to some is the RB system, but to get one to canada would likely cost you upwards of $1500. Its $900 american, plus exchange and outrageous shipping costs, then duty at the border, and so on and so forth. I got a set of wheels from Tire Rack for $89 a piece US, after exchange, duty, and brokerage fees from UPS, they ended up costing me nearly $750.

$1,500? Only if you're getting ripped off. remember, our dollar is $.94 USD right now and back when it was $.63 I didn't pay anywhere near $1,500. It should be far cheaper now. Even at $100 for shipping and duties you'd only be at about $850 CDN.

A handy tip is to AVOID UPS wherever possible. They charge their own broker's fees to take it across the border. USPS, howver, means zero broker's fees.

The guy said its brand new in the box, and he wants $200 for it. Is it just like an axle back system? or a cat back, I've never seen a pic of one.

If I remember right mine was not cat-back... pretty much over the axle and back...

Black Dragon Auto may have a photo or schematic of it.

Got it : http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icata.../t.asp?page=46

$189 US brand new...

Run, don't walk, away from any "deals" this guy may have...

That sounds like an awesome deal. So what do you guys think, I'd be better off, to get a custom one made? I don't wanna buy another stock exhaust. I know some one who has a RB header than they may part with, once they've pulled their 12A out of their parts RX-7 thats heading to the junkyard.

You'd be better off getting the Racing Beat one.

Remember, mazda themselves have used RB exhaust systems. They've been in the game for about three decades and know the temperature and pulse requirements of rotary exhaust. Plus their systems sound good.

If your looking for just something to replace your exhaust, By all means go ahead. If your looking for performance get the RB exhaust because after you use the pacesetter you'll just end up looking for one anyways and will have spent twice as much.

pretty much everybody carries pacesetter, online or not.

I don't know what the shipping may cost, but summit has that kit for $169 USD.

everyone on every forum i've been on likes to bash pacesetter. i actually ran a pacesetter catback on my supra for about a year, i was using a 3" downpipe with testpipe to the pacesetter, so i had only 1 muffler, it was amazingly quiet and had a awesome sound considering how much pressure was going through it while i was running 20+psi boost.

i've also used a pacesetter header on my 13b. everyone said it would rust out and explode in a year, kill my unborn children, etc etc. anyways other than having to get it machined down a bit to fit perfect on the side of the block it was a awesome header, tons more power and it never exploded, the welds held even with me turning them completely red running too rich a few times.

anyways if its just the catback i say go for it. or headers too, but they dont make a complete system for our cars..

if you are running open pipes to just the muffler it will be overly loud, but if you still have your cats it'll be quiet and probably last longer.
