have you used an RX-8 ****?? it looks like it would be a good ****, what do you think of the one in the miata. i have found the **** in the first gen to be a bit too tall. for a while i was just using the lever with out the **** and i liked the feel.

the rx-8 shifter:

the rotor-emblem on the top digs into your palm. I didnt drive it, but Metallic_Rock did, and said he didnt like it at all.

I have the exact same idea as you on the fb-shifter. the rx-8 would be even worse, its VERY tall. however, the throw on that tranny is SHORT@!!!

what i'm going to do is get one of those small ball shifters that screw all the way down the shaft.

momo, sparco, or the one i'm going with, isotta, all make ones like this.

I sat in an RX-8 and although the **** looks cool it is VERY small and not very ergo. It would be the first thing I'd replace. Keep an eye out on eBay. It won't be long before they start showing up when people start replacing them.

The Miata and FD **** has too small of a thread pitch and diameter.. it wont fit. 1st and 2nd gen ***** can be alternated.
Yes you should be able to go down to your local Mazda dealership to purchase RX-8 accessories.

How cool would it be if someone made a nice ergo shift **** for our 1st Gens with a rotor shaped emblem on it? I'd buy one!

Bah..I bet they'd charge around $100 for the damn thing anyway. No where near worth it.

I dont like them. They look tiny on the top, making the whole shifter look too small and skinny.
