RX-7 Targa
Hi All,
I'm looking for anyone who has info on the 1st Gen Targa conversions.
The only pic I have of one is this:
But I'm starting to develop a slight obsesion with it, and want to know more about it.
Thanks!

get a sawsal and start cutting, , then see if you can make the section that you cut out go on and off easily afterward, if not your screwed, and oh ya, make sure the frame is reinforced, cause you might bend your car in two if you go over too many bumps, aka there is no such thing as a conversion, at least not one that you can find... good luck anyhow

Well apparently it was able to make the cover of MOTOR TREND MAGAZINE's annual spots car preview, so...
There must have been somone doing conversions, similar to what Pacific Avatar was doing to make convertibles.
THAT's what I'm looking for info on.
Anyone else with any any smat-*** remarks can just skip it...

Speaking of Targa's
Once and a while i'll see an Old 84 or 85 with the silver Targa roof!!!
Whats the deal with these, Is there anything special about them???? any little thing at all??
Are they worth more then a regular 12a Rx?????? Plz help.

They are sexy... Some idiot put a aftermarket sunroof in my rex. I was thinking about cutting the mid section off... Look at your roof, it is made out of thin metal, with some reinforcements it could be fine.... Add a rollbar, some frame reienforcements BAM sexy! You could use the t-top latches out of a 300zx or something and wow it would be hot.

But being as it is Motortrend's '81 Sprts car review, I don't see why there would be a toy on the cover.

The conversion to the Targa roof was undertaken by California Custom Coach who I believe did over 25 RX-7s in the early 1980s. A firm in Australia also made a prototype which did not get design approval.
Unless you reinforce the body pan the conversion is too flexible. Mazda in fact looked at producing a gen 1 Targa but it never went past the design stage.
Having driven a range of Targa top sports cars from the Honda CRX to the Lotus 46 GT, I think its a good concept to avoid complex soft top problems, and cold air hitting the back of your neck!
The RX-7 Gen 2 convertible arrangement was an attempt to have the advantages of both.

kuhlrx7:- Thanks for the info, its my ambition to scan all RRs and have a maxi databank of rotary knowledge. I came across a few auto magazines from the early 80s in a secondhand bookshop and was surprised by the number of adverts for upgrading the engine and body of RX-7s.
