Rusty SA gas tank

Just dropped it from my new (to me) 79 project. Fuel filter clogged .. once tank was dropped became obvious why.
What have you SA guys done about this , any long term working techniques since new one NLA?
I’m thinking soak in evaporust a week or so, rinse, dry then quickly slosh some MMO around, drain, install.
Opinions?

Agree. Had the same prob with my SA tank. Dropped, took to a rad shop and had them chem-dunk it, then bought the POR gas Tank Kit ($30 then) and resealed the tank. Worked like a charm.

I would also advise having the tank professionally boiled out and then reseal with a kit from POR 15. You really need to get all of the crap out of there rather than encapsulate it. Good SA tanks are near impossible to come by these days.

If you have a shop do the cleaning, you won't need the kit but instead just the POR15 itself (much cheap).

I thought the Kit came with the etching compound too? Cleaning is good of course, but the POR won't adhere as well unless the Metal Ready etching solution isn't applied first! My experience anyway...
Metal Ready ava separately too, tho, so as suggested, might be cheaper to buy the 2 components separately rather than kit-form. A lot of Auto parts (NAPA in my case) stores sell these separately.
