Rusting air cleaner and cover - repaint and lettering?

Saw a couple older related threads, but wanted to see if I could crowdsource the up-to-date wisdom on this....

My air cleaner (cover in particular) is rusting and starting to look pretty bad; I'm hoping to strip it down to the metal, rust prep it and repaint (Ford Blue, I believe, is the stock color for 85 FB GSL).

But I also want to get the lettering right.

I saw some reference to folks who might have decals or vinyl lettering in the right font, but would like to actually paint the lettering on, as on stock.

Not sure if any others have encountered this problem, and might have access to stencils for all the labels/lettering on the air cleaner?

Considering having my own made if no one else has them (and if I do will be glad to share with interested parties).

How have others been dealing with this?

Thanks,

--Mike

Made my own vinyl lettering for my RB air cleaner. I wanted it to appear stock and got it pretty darn close. I have photoshop files for this is you are able to manipulate them. I am happy to share. What file formats are you able to work with?

Not sure if these are still available or not, but this guy used to sell replacement air cleaner decals. I have not saw this member post in quite awhile but his last activity was May of this year.

That looks awesome.

I'm not too well versed in Photoshop (although my daughter is...); I guess whatever is high res/no jaggy edges?

Is there a specific Photoshop format, or are jpegs good enough?

Don't use photoshop..... It's an image based program...... You need a vector file in order to be cut out of vinyl..... Vector allows you to scale as big as you need with out jaggy edges

I redo / redraw old out of print decals on my printer / cutter all the time....

You can also invert the decal and use it as a paint mask as well

I can probably make you a set of you pm me

Silkscreen via photosensitive screen process from a black-on-clear positive print (via laserjet overhead film), works out very nice.

I may still have my vector files tucked away somewhere; Did them originally in AutoCAD and then rendered a set as PDFs

Will post them up if I can find them.

Works for the finer details (like the instructions on the cleaner body) that are too fine for vinyl, too.

Pictures of the result are here. 3 years on, still looks great.

*Those are the pics I remember seeing!*

That's *exactly* what I want to do, albeit in stock colors on stock air cleaner.

Would be great to get as many details as possible on how you did it, files you used if available, etc.

Really beautiful job.

Most of the details were in my old build thread, starting around page 28:

PDF files are attached for the logo (with orientation dot), cleaner body instructions, and the curved text.

Several weeks of work, back in 2013 - including finding someone who could proofread the Japanese!
Attached Files
File Type: pdf
MazdaLogoComplete.pdf (25.8 KB, 145 views)
