rust

Thanks for all the responses to my compression question. Now for my next concern, how do these cars hold up to rust? The daily driver i'm looking would be driven in snow, which means road salt anf so forth. The drain holes look really clean, how do the wheel wells hold up?

Thanks

the wheel wells are prone to rust as is the rear deck floor if it is filled with moisture. the whole storage bin area is prone.

Alright, i have been hunting down rust on my SE for the last month... where i have found rust:

Tire wells:
Mazda didn't seal their tirewells very well and they are made of multible sheets of metal... it water get inbetween the folds, you will rust..

Spare tire area:
Water will sometimes just sit in there.... moisture collects, and it sits... though usually it won't rust badly.

Under the car:
Anywhere there is bare metal, you will find rust. If you get adventurious, pull the gas tank out, and look along the frame, chances are you will find rust.

Any place you have weather seals.
The hatch, the top, any place where water can sit, it can/will rust.

Bottom of doors:

Well, you have to realize that the car is 15+ years old, and rust will take it toll. It depends on how much you want to do to take care of it. I am trying to get rid of all the rust i find, its a pain, but i want my SE done right.

But if you just want to take care of the worst of it, you are looking at the firewells. Cut and weld/rivit, fiberglass, just take care of the rust, and keep moisture out.

My REPU was a rust bucket. Surface Rust everywhere. Now she's all painted and pretty per the pic below. Thanks to 11 gallons POR 15's Metal Ready and a black andn decker 4.5" angle grinder with 12 knot wire wheels

rust is the exchange of oxygen into the metals.... if you dont allow oxygen to reach it ie a sealer or the bedliner spray it wont be as prone to rust, but there are oxides in just about everything, salt balically speeds up the process as a catalyst
