rust

my car is very rusty on the outside of the wheel wells(already fixed the inside of the wheel wells thanx to you guys)anyways the ouside is rusted right though, i camre across to this restoration of this guy that welded a hole rear end on his, where i live i cant find anyone that is parting out any rx7 with no rust, so i cant do that. my car is as rusty as this one..

thats really risky operation on a sub frame type car, like ours. it's a good idea but think about it. what holds our cars together? it's not like he's taking that body and putting it on the frame of our cars(b/c there isn't a frame). if his welds don't hold his car will fall right in half and i doubt that welding will be able to hold the strain and twisting forces. it seems very risky. thats like taking a frame and cuting it in half them welding it back together and expecting it to not fall apart. i jsut don't think it's the right solution.

I do know that Mr. Barcode Boy is parting out his GSL-SE, but he said that the body is in pretty bad shape.

I'm sure if you asked around...junkyards, garages, etc... you could find a rear end. Or you could just go to your nearest autobody shop and ask them to order one for you, they'll most likely have one.

Although I agree with 13B4port. It sounds pretty risky.

I have a very good friend of mine that is a rebuilder. He specializes in purchasing newer, low mileage cars like Hondas and VW's that have been rear ended and totalled, then purchases new rear clips and welds them together. His cars have been 'out on the roads' for years with noooo problems. He is extremly skilled and makes damn good money on each car. (Example- he just finished a 2002 Honda Civic sport whatever that he bought wrecked at auction for about $4,000 and sold it for $11,000. He had $3,000 in costs. Made $4,000 gross on the deal.)
What you want to do can be done, but it's gotta be done right and it's gonna be pricey...If you have any questions, I can get you my friends number and you can talk to him..

ok according to I-CAR, the people who set the standards for all auto body repair, as long as there is a procedure in the specific repair manual for that car, its ok. As far as the welding goes, if done properly it should be just as strong as stock, although contrary to popular belief, it is not a good idea to make it*stronger*. These cars as well as everything else built since the mid 70's was made to break. The passenger compartment is meant to be stable while the front rails, and rear end of the car is meant to accept the force of a collision, therefore protecting the occupants by directing the energy around them.

BUT, to answer your question, this "sectioning" is probably acceptable if done correctly.

BE SURE to reinstall all necassary, factory equivilant corrosion protection.

mcinnes, check with a local body shop.. they sell pieces of 18 or so gauge metal that's bent into an L with v-slots cut along the length of one side. This piece is made for repairs around curves, such as the outer wheelarch. Repairing the wheelarch can be difficult though, as it's hard to make all the cruves meet smoothly. That's why every junkyard I find a first gen in, I cut the rear quarters out.. he he

EDIT: Oh, and as far as the "sectioning" of two cars goes... it can be done and you'd never even know. My first '7 was two cars, with the cut being right behind the rear seat bolts. Someone did a VERY good job and I never even knew until I crawled under it and saw the weld line running across the car. That explained the reconstructed title the car had.

Yeah..Thats right White84SE..My friend sells his cars with reconstructed titles as well. You would never know the difference if done right.
