It Runs!!

well, i finally got it running for the first time.. sounds nice... smoked for the first 30 minutes prob.. hasnt been running in 8 years but purred like a kitten.. let it idle for 45 minutes.. then decided when i saw the low fuel light come on to take it on a cruise to the gas station for some more gas.... BAD IDEA.. made it all the way to the station... left it running.. paid for 20 bucks 93 octaine.. came out.. put gas in.. it DIED.. wouldnt start back up.. waited a while.. then finally had some help getting it back to the house.. vapor lock was mentioned by guy who helped.. where do i start?

look at the fuel system. is it getting fuel? fuel filter, fuel pump. then check spark. plugs, wires, coils..wont start without those thing working..usually i make a list when a problem starts, then i go down the list..vapor lock? ive never heard of that happening on a 7..good luck

I heard somewhere the lowest octane you can get is best for a N/A rotary... getting premium makes no difference, except in your wallet

Dont quote me on that, I just heard :P

RotaryMelon, you are absolutely correct. In N/A applications premium fuel is a waste of money.

If the car hasn't been running in 8 years then I would give it a complete tuneup.
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil and filter, fresh gas and filter.

The carb could also need a rebuild, and look for dry rotted vacuum hoses leaking.

Congrats on waking up the sleeping beauty...lol

Good luck.

Sounds like the plugs are fouling out. How do the plugs look>? Have you changed the plugs yet? Can be a carb issue as well. Just some suggestions. Have to eliminate things one at a time.

Ok plugs are ok then. What color are the plugs when you start having your problem? Or try taking a look at your plugs when that happens again. Are the plugs wet with fuel? Are they black like running rich? Just some things for you to check out.

How does that exhaust smoke smell? Does your coolant get low? How is the temperature?

coolant is fine, temp is less than half way.. doesnt smoke anymore, was just initial running.. when its cold it will run and idle fine, but its when i try to move it it will work fine for about 2 minutes( circled block one time) and then it starts to chug and quits..

sounds like carb issues.... sp when it starts to run bad, can you rev the engine at all or does it have a rough time?

Still sounds like a fuel pump issue. I had one that would do something similiar to what you mentioned, It would start fine and run for a bit and then just quit running. Turned out the fuel pump would overheat and lock up. If you waited a little bit it would come back on but It got to the point that I would have to start banging on it with a wrench to get it pumping again so the car would start. I would check there especially right after it dies, Leave the key on and see if it's still working. If it isn't smack the plate that the pump sits on and if it starts working again replace the pump.

is there seats in the carb that are only used when the car is warm as opposed to being cold? maybe a seat sticking from sitting so long?

Fuel supply is being choked off somewhere. If it isn't the pump, and the carb screens are good, go back and check the fuel filter, even if it is new. Check it when it stops. With the car sitting for that long, fuel does all sorts of nasty things in the fuel tank. Next step may be to clean that out. Debris in the fuel tank is a highly likely source of plugging. Not only the filters, but the pickup tube inside the tank.

Thourough dousing with carb cleaner.

Douse the carb with carb cleaner after she cooled sown of course. Then let it sit overnight then do it agin and try to start it again. That dont work rebuild the carb.
