It Runs!!
Today is very exciting for me. For the first time in a year and a half my 82 has an engine that runs. This is a unique engine though. Here is a little history. Sorry if its a little long winded.
About 2 years ago, I picked up an 84 GSL parts car with a "running" engine in it for $750. I drove it onto the car trailer when I picked it up and everything. The engine was a streetported S4 NA 6 port engine. All the stock fuel injection was intact. I knew it had problems, wouldn't idle below 1500rpm and had various other problems running. I swapped everything to my 82, same problems existed. So, I went on the second gen forum to try to figure out the problem. Nobody could figure it out, and the engine never ended up running right on the FI system. So, I decided to go with a carb. I bought up a used Jay-Tech intake manifold and a brand new off the shelf Edelbrock 600cfm carb. I took all the FI parts off the engine and put the carb parts on, including the 12A distributor and original coils. The car sat, waiting for parts and time to work on it again. Earlier this year I picked up a lightweight steel flywheel from Terrh on the forums with a clutch. I pulled off the flywheel on my S4 engine and checked the code to make sure I got the right counterweight. I was not happy when I found out that the flywheel was actually for an 83-85 12A engine. So, the flywheel was wrong and when I pulled the rear stationary gear to check the bearing, it was trashed. I pulled the engine out and decided to tear it down. The ports were badly done and the rotor housings themselves were bad. The irons needed to be lapped as well. So, I got to looking for either a good price for a rebuild or a used running engine.
Well, I found that a rebuild was not an option, it would have cost too much. But, thanks to misterstyx69, I got a running engine, full harness, good tranny and various other things all for $200. The engine is an S4 6 port NA, stock. Catch was, I had to drive 8 hours one way to pick it up. Not a big deal for a $200 engine. That was in late June. Ever since, I've been getting the engine set up with the carb I bought before, getting everything I needed installed. Finally, as of November 5th the car runs on that $200 engine, on a carb that has only been used by a few people to my knowledge.
Anyway, it took a little tinkering, but I got it to run pretty good without even touching the jetting. All I had to do was adjust the idle a little and the idle mixture and it ran pretty good. I still haven't driven the car as my clutch hardline is bad and I couldn't bleed it, and the brakes are not functional. But anyway, I'll post up a few vids of what the engine was like. Now, there is no exhaust system on the car, just a header much like the RB roadrace header so it was LOUD. I'll post the vid in a few hours when I get it edited.

Oh ya was I determined. I have far too much time and money invested in the car for what it is, but I love the car. I could never get rid of it.
Anyway, I got the vid done. I'm not very good at video editing yet, but I tried to make it a little interesting. But just so everyone is up to speed on what the car has, here is a list I believe to be mostly complete.
-S4 NA 6 port 13B, stock with 12A front cover and GSL-SE oil pan and custom made solid aluminum motor mounts
-Paceshitter header, collector cut off and dual pipe flange welded on to make my own FC style true dual exhaust.
-Jay-Tech intake, which means no 5th and 6th port actuators for me.
-600 CFM edelbrock carb, manual choke.
-RB lightweight steel flywheel and counterweight
-HD 215mm clutch & PP
-FC oil cooler and SS braided lines
-Custom inclined rad support to fit the 91 escort e-fan in front of the motor on the 84 rad
-Holley 40psi fuel pump and bypass style FPR, currently set at 6 psi
-3/8" feed and return lines throughout
-RJS fuel cell custom installed to allow dual mufflers like the FC
-84 12A tranny with custom harder mount
-Stock high mileage rear end (WILL blow up probably next summer, to be replaced with ford 8.8)
-Custom gauge cluster with iEquus performance 8000 gauges
-AEM gauge type wideband A/F meter and iEquus performance 8000 fuel gauge in custom radio surround
-S4 GXL seats
-RB front springs (I think) and fiat front springs on the rear (not sure which model fiat, but late 70's)
-Tokico blue shocks and struts
-84 front strut assemblies with spindles
-Respeed big brake kit on the way, already have calipers, spindles, rotors, pads and lines
To come:
-Full set of poly suspension bushings
-custom drilled rear axles and adapters on the front to fit my 16x7, 5x108 wheels with 205/50 fronts and 225/50 rears
-Finish the exhaust with 2 4" round by 18" long Magnaflow mufflers as presilencers and 2 6" round by 18" long mangnaflows out the back on either side of the fuel cell, with 2" piping in between
-Lots of body work
-Lots of interior work
In the not so near future:
-Turbo blow through on the edelbrock using about 10-12PSI boost
-TII tranny and clutch
-8.8 ford rear end and custom driveshaft to make it all fit. Panhard bar instead of the watts linkage.
Alright, there's probably something I missed, but there you go. A mostly complete list of my current mods and mods to come. Hope you enjoy.

Oh ya, I had to fiddle around with the timing a little bit to get it right. When I first started the motor it ran horribly and it would stall if you even touched the throttle. Turns out the dizzy was off by 1 tooth retarding the timing. When I first reinstalled the dizzy, I ended up with it 1 tooth advanced and ended up advancing the timing by probably 20*. The engine was super responsive at this timing and even had a slight lope. It sounded amazing, but I put it back to 0* for safety at this point. Overall, I had the dizzy out probably 4 times trying to get it right. The engine ran a whole lot more than in the vid.
EDIT: the vid may not be available for a few min or hours. Not sure how long youtube takes to authorize a vid.

Ya, it did have a lawnmower sound at first, and I didn't even notice the relation to the lawnmower sitting 5 feet away. Anyway, the more I listened to it idle, it started sounding like a high reving harley. I'm getting the exhaust made up right now, no mufflers yet, but it will exit out the rear of the car and I may actually get an accurate reading on the wideband. The wideband was on and off constantly. My guess is that it was because the sensor is pretty much at the end of the header and no piping after that, so I was getting too much normal air in the sensor. We'll see. I have no clue if it was running rich or lean, but I know it was close. I'm still surprised at how it ran without any jetting changes. Only idle mixture adjustments and idle speed. To tell you the truth, the throttle response was as good if not better than my Alero.

No, not the flywheel you sold me Terrh. Its being used on this engine. I just said the flywheel on the other 13B I had was the incorrect one and it trashed the bearings, which lead me to this engine.

Awesome, thats the exact setup I'm planning after I'm done with the 12A bridgeport on my '82. But one question. You have a S4 13B, with an '84 tranny, going into the stock '82 rear end. Which driveshaft are you using?

Stock 82 driveshaft. The output shaft is the same on all N/A trannies from 79 up to 91. The difference is in the turbo trannies. They have a different output shaft spline number and size I believe.
I got part of the exhaust done today, put it on (still no mufflers), and managed to get a reading from the wideband. Running about 10.5:1 at idle. WAY too rich, which explains why it starts up so easily even when cold, and why I can't use the choke. I think I actually have to go into jetting to correct this. I figured I'd have to go bigger on the jets, but I guess I was wrong. The strength of the exhaust pulses is amazing, even through the true dual 2" system. And what a totally unique sound too. Best way to describe it is it sounds like a Harley, or dare I say somewhat like an open header V8.

Well, got the exhaust done today. Just put some $30 "turbo" generic mufflers on it. Its surprisingly quiet, but the sound is HORRIBLE! Anyway, went for a little ride around the block. Engine is fairly responsive, but definately needs some tuning. I let it go to 6 grand once, definately didn't make nearly the power I expected. Didn't feel much different than stock. I have a feeling that has something to do with that flapper Edelbrock uses in their secondary barrels to make a smoother transition. I think I'll just pull that and see what happens. A/F ratios aren't too bad though. Mabey a little lean in the top end, but I need to get the proper mufflers on the car and have proper brakes to get it tuned right. I have a long way to go yet, but its great to actually drive it again.
