rough idle, alternator gauge pegged out
I have a 1982 RX-7 with about 86,000 miles (12A? motor). About three weeks ago I had trouble starting it, flooded it and ran the battery down. So I jumped the car and it started. Since then the alternator gauge has pegged out to the right (18amps?) when the engine was running (I drive it every day to work).
But then, about two days ago the engine began running rough, especially at low rpm's and backfires through the exhaust also at low rpm's. I replaced the battery (which was old) and a new fuel filter but I'm thinking the problem is electrical or ignitian. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated - Ned

Alternator crapping out. But dont buy a replacement from pep-boys, autozone or kragen...LIFETIME WARRANTY IS USELESS IF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THEM TWICE A YEAR OR SO.
The cheapest way is to upgrade to S4 or early MX-6 alternator...direct swap. I have been lucky with junkyard stuff which usually comes with 15 days warranty.

Hey, wackyracer, I replaced the alternator and it fixed things....mostly. The car runs much better but I still am noticing a hesitation when the engine is idling. Will investigater further but wanted to let you know that your information helped a bunch. Thanks.....Ned
