rotary noise levels?

ok guys, i was talking to someone about fbs and fcs today and we got into noise levels. and started talking about exausts and cat gutting and such. then i remembered one time when i was at the DMV, a really loud fb came roaring by, and it didnt sound "good" either. it was loud and obnoxious, and i hated it, since im getting an fb of my own in march, im wondering if thats what it sounds like stock? or with gutted cats? can anybody shine some light on this, because when i get the fb, i defitnately wouldnt want it sounding like that. thanks and if you want to talk to me directly, AIM me @ suprastyle86.
thanks.

Stock 1st-gens were damn near silent. They were marketed as the "Silent Sports Car" actually.

Stock SA's used the thermal reactor and the heat exchanger as part of the silencing. Stock FB's used the box exhaust manifold and the converters as part of the silencing. In both cases, if you install a header and retain the stock muffler, or even if you just remove the converter, it will be loud. Not LOUD loud, but noticeable enough to make you feel kinda bad about coming home at 3am knowing that your neighbors have little kids trying to sleep.

A new RB exhaust system (full) is also pretty damned quiet as well. You pay a lot for it, though.

I'm with peejay on that one. I have personal experience with using the stock muffler with a header system. Your exhaust goes from whisper quiet to rice-boy fart-can loud. Like my autoX chums like to say: "It sounds like an outboard...on crack!"

Definately an aquired taste.

I am going to try a Magnaflow SS muffler next spring to see how it sounds. I'm not hoping for quieter, but perhaps a different tone. If you want quiet and performance, get the RB muffler. It sounds positively orgasmic and will last virtually for ever.

i still have the stock muffler equipped..but no cats or anything else, just a straight pipe from the header to muffler. it's pretty darn loud...but i like loud exhaust, so i'm happy with it. i plan to use an RB header an A`pexi N1 muffler, might be louder..but the tone will be good.

My car has a pacesetter setup on it and it's loud, not obnoxiously loud, but loud enough that I tend to soft-foot it. I am thinking of splicing a presilencer scaveneged from a junkyard in the pipe right after the header - the closer to the header the more effective it is.

OEM resonators (presilencers) tend to be very high quality stuff, and you don't have to pay triple digits for them either if you get them "used".

I have a custom exhaust with what is essentially the RB headers (pacesetters ground down to proper quality), with 2 cherry-bomb style presilencers. I run dual primaries back to the muffler where they're collected. Carl might have to post the muffler type I have since I've forgotten, but I'll tell you I have a nice quiet setup with no tinny sound in the exhaust note at all. Tres cexi!
