Rotary Newbie! I've got a few questions

Hi everyone. I just bought an '83 RX7 the other day and a friend of mine told me about these forums. The car is a bit rough, but I plan on fixing it up. Anyway, the big problem is that it smokes rather profusely. I mean it smokes like a junky old chainsaw. I know that rotary engines inject a little bit of oil into the engine, but I have a feeling its getting way too much oil in it. The engine has about 170k miles on it, and someone told me it could be the oil seals inside the engine. It still feels like it has good compression, so I don't think its worn out. It smokes mostly after I rev it up, and then for a little while at idle, and then it clears up. Could the oil injection unit be pumping way too much oil in the engine, or do I probably need new seals?

How often dose it smoke? Normaly they smoke for 1 to 2 minutes or even a bit longer if is cold out side when warming up the car and that is normal for a rotary engine.

I would say its the seals. How much did you pay for it?

I paid 600 for it. It runs and drives good, but the interior needs a little work and it smokes. How hard is it to replace the seals for a fairly experienced mechanic? How much does a seal kit cost?

Is it black smoke or white smoke? If black I agree with the seals, white means you're burning coolant.

If you're looking to fix it up you should be aware of certain problem areas for rust on these cars. This is a decent thread on the subject. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...highlight=rust Note that the bins are the worst, and a search for storage bin rust should yield a bunch of threads on that specific topic.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Dont worry, for now. When the engine is run low on oil consistantly, the oil seals dont stay cool and will get hard. They will leak oil when sitting and smoke on start up and eventually burns off. Just prepare yourself for a rebuild later and while it is open PORT it ! ! !
