Roof mount antenna?

So i will be converting from the rear quarter panel to the roof mount antenna, but I just have a question. Now to start the best bet is something like the VW style base:

As you can tell one has 2 wires and the other just one ... what would the second wire be for? Ground?

This is the antenna I'll be going with or something simillar if anyone is interested:

Want to keep a clean look this antenna is only 3.55" long too so very compact. I know i might not get the greatest reception, but considering that my current antenna doesn't go up and still getting pretty good signal from all stations, I don't see I this would be any worse considering it would be mounted higher than stock position.

Also this would be going in place of the stock rear window sprayer, and since its broken and I've never used it before, I don't see why i would need to buy one and fix that problem.

NVM ... found the answer to my question, if anyone is woundering, that second wire is for antenna signal amplification. There's a computer circuit that is turned on and off via the radio's on/off button. The first pic is of older models which didn't have that feature (or that extra trouble)... also further reading an adapter wire is needed to convert it to regular style ends.

The radio around here sucks so much that I am planning on taking the antenna off, welding in a patch, and not putting a new one in. If my FB ever gets upgraded to "frequent driver" from "almost there eternal project garage sitter" then maybe I'll go back and put on a little antenna for an XM or Sirius receiver. The over-the-air radio in this part of the world sucks beyond belief.
