Roll Cage (welding)

Not sure if this goes in the Fabrication or Non Technical section, but say you designed a roll bar, how would you weld it? Something like this?

Is this "tube notcher" something a person can buy, or is it a multi-grand computerized setup machine?

Theres also software you can use. You input the size of the two tubes and the angle between them, and it will print a template with a wavey shape to it that you can wrap around the tube end. If you grind away to the shape of the template, it'll give you the perfect fishmouth to weld them. It's kinda ghetto, but the math is correct and it's free.

Very interested in this! Do you have a link or any names for the software?

The drill press/hole saw units will frustrate you more than help. Hole saws were never designed for interrupted cuts. They loose teeth quickly when used that way.

1.5" tube is large enough you can get in there and fish mouth it with an angle grinder.

yes.

if your just building one cage for your car i would use the hole saw jig in the drill press( if you have one) cut the pipe and notch it with the hole saw. you will need to keep it cool with water or oil while notching. i've done about 12 race cars that way in a fab shop and you get a first class product.

you can also get a nipper to notch the pipe. i dont know the $$$ and i have not used one but i've seen one at a shop in town.
