Risky business

I'm going to test the waters here. I have a 84 12a swapping to s4 13b turbo with 12a tranny if it bolts up I want to see how long it'll last until it goes with upgraded flywheel and cluch. Anyone else tried this?

Sounds good! Any recommendations what flywheel and cluch combos will work? I was looking on racing beat and mazdatrix website for both. I know I'm going to have to change the rear counter weight

Interesting how long has that lasted you? I'm assuming you dont race it at all just drive it around once in a while?

The tranny will handle it fine with just the stock 13B clutch and plate. The stronger you make the clutch the more stress that will get passed to the tranny, so stick with stock and should be good until its not.

for the clutch you want a sprung hub, and its hard to tell from pics, but there is a thing called a marcell spring, its between the two facings, and ideally you want both of these, they cushion impacts, and so will make life easier for the transmission/rest of the drive line.

the light flywheel and upgraded pressure plates and all of that jazz is totally fine

I've heard of a sprung hub but wasn't sure how they work. I'll look for one on racing beat or mazdatrix thanks for the help guys 👍

pics to follow, i used ACT's website, they had bigger pics

the stock disc has a spring hub, and its hard to see, but there is a spring between the two friction surfaces.

the not stock disc has neither...

I'm really thankful for this thread. I have a street port 13B on the stand and wasn't sure if my 12A tranny would be strong enough.
Also I was being steered towards racing clutch parts by my brother who drag race (turbo/alcohol 12a car) so I can launch harder. Never really considered that for my pleasure driving, on street only, that it would just be abuse to the driveline.
I don't need that 1/10 of a second as much as I need my tranny to stay in one piece!
Thanks j9fd3s, and Sean58 for posing the question.

Now wash your hands and stay safe.

What are the differences between a 6 puck and a regular cluch disk. I've never driven a car with a pucked clutch

the puck style has more capacity, but it does not slip either. so it engages more like an on/off switch. not a great idea if the transmission is fragile. they also wear out really fast on the street

Center Force Dual Friction clutch and pressure plate for the win. Also, in my experience, a lighter fly wheel can be easier on the drive line under downshifts. But the key to keeping that transmission alive is to be smooth no matter what engine is in front of it. That said, they do not tolerate abuse for long and more HP amplifies this.
