rewiring car

i was wondering if anyone has rewired their entire car including the headlights ,turnsignals and taillights ect...if so did you use the stock switches and how did you go about this...also does anyone know how to regulate the amount of amps going through the switches and to the lights...do you do this by wire size or are there some kind of risistors or something any help would be great...im in the process of puting a turboII jap motor in my 85 12a...thanks for the help

The only time you would put a resistor in line is when you want to drop the voltage down (for a 6 volt accesory for example). If you do this with headlights they'll be too dim. They were meant to run at the full 13.8 volts or so the car supplies. Running too small a wire will cause the wire to overheat and melt, burn.

If you are running a high current device with a little itty bitty switch then use the switch to drive an automotive relay that can handle the power.

Apparenly you do not have much knowledge when it comes to electrical. A task of this size, you should avoid.

What is wrong with the stock wiring to the head lights and other lighting systems?

BTW it is a relay that would be installed to controll a device without having all the amperage going thru the switch.

I had my whole car re-wired a while ago with the help of a auto elec friend. Cost me a little bit of money but boy was it ever worth it.

Seriously, ever looked behind your stereo/back of dash/around passenger's feet space...... it's a mess man.... ughhh.

Just gave me the piece of mind to know that everything was tidied up and bundled nicely. Some shocking wiring jobs done out there

yeah, I looked around, and there are probably 100 unused connectors in my car. I would really like to take all that crap out someday, but it would be a big project to replace all the wireing in the car. the only thing it would do is clean the car up and save maybe a few pounds (I have a LOT of unused connectors)

the reason i am changing my wires is because i am tired of all the unused wires and conectors all over the place and i am using all after market guages...does any on know if the stock speedometer cable will hook up to an autometer speedometer

its not as bad as you think, buy alot of relays and tons of different colored wire. strip all the carpets and interior and follow the wires and what is being used match it with another wire, then switch the wires to the device one at a time.

Here is what I did for my PRO7 car, is once I got everything off the car that the rules allowed me to removed. I cut open the wire loom and cut out all the unused circuits.
Once I got everything out, test all the existing device, then I taped the wire looms back up ( buy good 3M super77 or equal) but make sure the car still starts.

If your wires are brittle, then at least you have a understanding of what needs to control what.
The wire schematic is helpful but can be a pain to follow sometimes.

If you're REALLY thinking about it, a Painless wiring kit would be the way to go. (At least on a full Race car.)

I've installed a couple of painless wiring kits and I have discovered that it's best just to make your own wiring harness.

Aviod wiring the whole car unless you HAVE to.
