Retarded Lights...

My switch for my lights its very weird. MY high beams do not work.. only when I pull it back to flash the lights, the high beams work. The last 2 times at night my normal low beams did not work at first. I had to flip up the lights, turn blinker on off , then flash high beams for about a minute then they will come on for no reason!

What is up with this? I think Kenetsu said something about contact cleaner? I really hope i dont have to replace my signal unit as a new one costs 300 dollars..

happened to me too. The contacts just wear out after a while and no longer make contact with the limited movement of the switch. If you open it up and figure out how it works you will see what I mean. I was able to easily fix mine by grinding down one of the plastic pieces that moves the contacts so that it would go further and touch for a full solid contact. Works great and was free. Just takes a bit of time to disasseble and figure out how it all works.

Edit: The white piece inside the switch mechanism in this pic by Kentetsu I belive is attached to the part that I ground down a tiny bit.

(I think it was that peice... it was white anyway)

The problem is due to buildup on the contacts. My suggestion is to clean them, while Big Ern's suggestion to grind down the parts will simply move the contact point to a new location (one not already suffering from buildup).

The link I posted involves simply removing a couple of pieces to give you access to the contacts. Then you hose them down with some contact cleaner and you're good as new. Take your pick...

I cleaned mine up nice first, but it still didn't work. I think my problem was from dirty contacts for so many years that the contacts had arched which cases them to wear down so that they are physically smaller and thus movements of the switch would no long allow them to come in contact.

You can pick it up at radio shack (big money though) or at Autozone for half the price. The key is to get it into the contacts. To do that I think you have to remove some of the assembly (see my link posted earlier for instructions).

Use a pink pencil eraser to clean the contacts first, then spray a little cleaner on them if you want. Learned the eraser trick from my slot car days as a kid!

Right on.

It's a little tough to reach those contacts. After the spray they were nice and shiney though.
