Replacing SA front strut inserts

I got the KYB strut inserts from racingbeat for my 79 because mine are shot. I got the strut housing off the car, removed the spring and dust cover, but the retaining nut/ gland nut seems to only be able to come out with some sort of spanner wrench or something. it sits flush with the strut housing and only has two small slots in the top so I cant get a pipe wrench on it which seems to be what most other people do when taking out the gland nut. Am I missing something here or is there a special tool I have to use to get this thing off? First time taking a strut apart so thanks for any advice.
