Replacing light in Driver's Door Lock

My driver's side power window gets stuck going back up. I plan on removing the door panel and replacing the grease.

While I'm in there, I plan on replacing the light bulb which illuminates the door lock cylinder. This light is standard on the '85 GSL. It turns on (well it would if it wasn't burned out) when I lift the door handle, making it easy to see the lock is in the dark.

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement light?

I looked at Radio Shack, but their bulbs are not bright enough (not enough amps).

Thanks, Cuz.

Mazda called it the "night light system" in the 1985 brochure. It became available once you "stepped up" to the GS, GSL or GSL-SE. I'm pretty sure that this feature started in 1984.
When the door handle is lifted up, a light mounted on top of the key cylinder will shine down on the door lock. It's on a timed circuit, so the light eventually goes out. I believe that it uses the same timing as the ignition illuminator. If the bulb is bad, Radio Shack carries a replacement.

Try an electrical Suply whole saler. They usually will have a part that will work, and its usually less money then the car parts store.

Here is an example Foglight bulb for my 1996 Pontiac Grand AM GT...

Autoparts Store - $15.00

Electrical Suply Store - $7.00

See so just look around a bit.

They may have to order the bulb, but who cares its not like it is a hugely critical part.

Any way just another option from Radio Crap, I mean Shack

Possibly the most difficult light to replace in the whole car. It's a very tiny bulb, in a tiny housing tucked into a tiny clip that holds the lock in place. Be careful not to accidentally pull the tiny white wire loose.

Yeah! I fixed mine while I was replacing the driver's window regulator.

My '85 Factory Workshop Manual has a wiring diagram on page 50:30 which lists the Door Lock Cylinder Light as a 3.4 watt bulb (at 12 volts this would be close to 3 amps if I remember the formula correctly: Watts = amps X volts). The manual goes on to show the same wattage for the Ignition Key Cylinder Light, but I don't think they are physically the same size. Sorry, my manual does not have a part number or even a picture.

I replaced the light once before when I was re-lubing the window mechanism, but the grain-o-wheat bulbs I purchased were much lower wattage. I remember having a hard time finding a powerful enough bulb. As I feared, the bulb is too weak to shed enough light on the lock.

I'll check with Radio Shack and see if they have a similarly spec'd light bulb.

Regards, Cuz.

Hmmm. Something happened to my decimal point. That should have been 0.3 amps, not 3 amps. 0.3 times 12 would be 3.6 watts. Sorry about that. Cuz.
