replacing fuseable links. what is this?

I'm using my wrecked FC parts car to swap parts over to this '79 SA. I'm doing the leading coils, alternator and fuses. I see there are only 3 fuses, and when I looked where everyone mounted there fuse box after changing to standard type fuses, there is this weird old-school electrical thing.

can anyone identify this and tell me how I could do away with it using parts off my FC?

And one more thing, The '80 FSM covers the '79 as well, correct? or do I need to a find a '79 specific?

That is a set of ballast resistors to drop the voltage through the points on the 79.If you swap over to an electronic ignition(80-85) then you would take them out of the circuit, and splice the wires on the 2 large ones to each other, and disregard the other 4 wires.Or you can take them completely out of the picture, and wire in your on ignition system through a relay, and eliminate the factory wiring. You need to upgrade to different coils at the same time as well, because the 79 coils were rated at 9 volts I think.Do a search on direct fire ignition, and you will more than likely find more info than you can process on the swap to an ignition system either using 3 FB coils,or a second gen coil pack.Good luck.

Chris

Would putting the FC lead coil in with my existing parts allow me to remove these?
I'm planning on doing the swap found in the FAQ.

Oh yeah re-read my post,I edited it.As long as you upgrade to an electronic system you have to remove these.

Okay, yeah, I re-read it. So, using the method described in the FAQ I needed to remove these and splice the 2 anyway then. That wasn't really clear in the thread about doing the coils.

Oh one more thing though. If I splice these will my stock trailing ignition get fried? I guess I coudl just disconnect the trailing ignition since it's for emissions mostly anyway if that is the case.

Swap the dizzy for an 81-85 before trying to bypass those resistors, or using the FC coil.
I really don't think points would be a good trigger for a direct fire setup.
