Sure thats fine. Theres usually a paper gasket there and thats it. But if you wanna seal it better why not.

It is not really important, but you probably should as it is there for a reason. I don't even recall if I put a gasket on when I replaced mine.

******+++--------LOOK!!!!--------+++******

thanks for the help

now, i think i found the bleed nipple, but it doesnt have a cap on it or anything. is that bad? its the thing that looks kind of like an upside down carburator jet, with threads on the bottom? it almost sticks as high as the top of the oil filter? im trying to confirm that is the nipple. and what happens since there isnt a cap on it?

There's a gasket?!?

I replaced mine twice, and never was there a gasket, or sealant, or anything. I've got an '84 GS if that makes a difference.

No, that isn't the bleed nipple... or at least it *shouldn't* be. The bleed nipple isn't on the master cyl, it's on the slave cyl. It didn't have a cap on mine either. I don't think the cap matters.
