Replacement of rear wheel bearings?

I have finally determined the sound in my rear is wheel bearing. I have drums on a base 81. In the Black Dragon catolog they have listed bearings. The wheel bearing kit comes with bearing and a oil seal. They also have other parts that are called wheel spacer, rear bearing collar. Do I also need to plan on replacing the wheel spacer and rear bearing collar or are these re-usable parts?
I am going to do both even though it is just one that is going bad so to get these other parts is an additional 36.00 I would like to put toward a paint job but if they are needed I will do it.

The bearing collar *should* be replaced when the bearings are replaced. The collars primary job, is to hold the bearing in place on the axle. It's 2nd job, the seal actually seals against it, not the axle.
I have no idea what they are calling the spacer, unless it goes on the outside of the bearing, for the bearing to seat against. I cannot see any reason it would need replaced.
The bearing kit should contain the bearing, seal, and collar.
You can probably get the bearings and seals much cheaper at a local parts store, though they may have to order them.

I'm not sure what the exact functin of the spacer and collar is. But I look at if this way, do it once, do it all and don't worry about it for another 25 years. The bearings need to be pressed off and on, not sure if those parts wil survive the R&R or not.

Thier kit only contains the bearing and seal. You need to order the collar(or retainer). It is what keeps the bearing in place after being pressed on and the old one has to be cut off to remove the bearing. The part # you need to order for the collar is 60-711. You do not need the spacer.

Check with Rockauto for a price comparison. The collar will be cut off to remove the bearings, and then the new bearings need to be pressed on. Some people have been able to press the new ones on at home using a long pipe over the axle to drive the bearing on, but most just take it to a shop to cut down on the chance of messing it up...

This thread represents what this forum is all about. The exchange of excellent information. My thanks to you guy's. If in Shreveport, let me buy you a beer. I was thinking of having it done but with this info I may do it myself (save 150.00). will replace with all new parts either way.

I was assuming (I know, bad idea) that the bearing kit would also have the collar in it, since it is rather important. Shame on me.

I agree that it should have a collar, it anything the seal should not be part of the kit. The seal is an optional but wise thing to replace but without the collar you cannot finish the job. I called them about this and they just shrugged their heads in, "I don't know."

Any domestic rear wheel bearing that I have purchased that needed a collar to retain the bearing has always come with it.

Same here, which led to me assuming it would be included in the kit.......

As I always say though, assume = *** - u - me. Hence, the shame on me.
