Replacement Coil

I have a bad coil on my 85 GS.
I called to get a replacement and the guy told me it had to be the same make as the current one.
That doesn't sound right to me.
What is the best coil for a good price?

Thanks

if I am not mistaken almost any aftermarket coil will work. If I were poor I would get one out of a junkyard. If not upgrade to two from the local speed shop.

Just my $.02

if u have the stock ignition, just buy the msd coil for non-msd ignition. they cost appx $35/each.

I've heard stock coils are around 30KV. What would a replacement
MSD coil(blaster coil, I presume) that is Non-MSD igition be?

Not 100% positive but seem to recall the figure of 45 KV listed for that coil setup but they do put out more KV at lower r.p.m. which helped pick up low rpm torqe on my car.

Whats a dead giveaway for a failing coil. OR one that is providing weak spark? I have the weirdest starting problem in my engine right now:
Starts right up when cold. Starts harder then a Motha-F#cker when its turned off warm and you try to start it with in 5seconds of turning it off-10minutes later.

It usually takes a near-flooring while turning the key to start getting some igition when it does this to start it.

This is a very cold climate too: 0-20F range right now. It never has done this in the past either. .I've ruled out all the obvious problems a while ago. No, the Plugs are not fowled or it would start hard all the time. What are syptoms of ignitors not working very good?

Would a bad ignitor do it? Hard starting right? But, how come it starts hard only when warm?! Just after turning it off up to 10minutes its very hard to start only.

Coil tech

Hey man,

coils do tend to show there weakness once hot, I recall reading something about greater resistance when warm, regardless. Get an ohm meter let the car get warm then refer to your trusty haynes manual for resistance measurements for your primary and secondary windings, all the 411 is in the book. Takes about 10mins to check. Most coil failures or weaknesses will show themselves at hig rpm also, so try shifting high at full throttle and look for hesitation, shuddering, etc.. ciao

Well I have replaced the Coil and igniter and still no spark from the trailing coil.
What should I look at next?

I checked all the connections and wires that I can see.
I am stumped.
Is there a fuse that goes to the coil that isn't in the fuse panel?
