Removing Fuel Pump

Hey guys!

I am going to be changing my fuel pump in my 81 RX-7 GSL.
I hear that i have to disconnect the pump from behind the drivers seat.

How do i do this without destroying my carpet?
Anyone got pictures?
....and steps to do it?

Thanks!

My 82 has the fuel pump under the car with the fuel filter, sure its not there? Mind you my friends 83 has its pump under the seat but I think he put it there.

Yup, you've gotta disonnect it from *under the bin* behind the driver's seat. The bin has five screws holding it in. Take those out, then pull the bin gently out about an inch or so. Reach your hand on the bottom and *squish* it upwards, so that it will slide out. Be careful of the little switch that controls the bin light, I fux0red mine pretty bad the first time.

Once the bin is out, you're looking for a 2-prong white plastic connector, with a pair of wires leading to a rubber plug in the floor of the car. Disconnect this white connector and thread it and the wires down through the hole by popping the rubber plug outwards.

When you get your new pump, you might have to change a few things. For example, mine could not be mounted horizontal like the old one, so I had to mount it on the slanted part behind the bin floor, making sure that I gave it enough clearance so that the rear suspension bar wouldn't hit it. I had to route new lines from that to the stock filter mounting location, and I used a new filter.

My fuel pump also just had two wires with no connector. A Red and a Black. Using my heynes I figured out which had to be which, and spliced the connector off my old pump onto my new one with a soldering iron and some wire shrink-wrap. Try to remember to thread the rubber plug and the shrinkwrap onto the wires before you solder them, so that you can put it all back together and not have any exposed wires or holes in your floor.

Then just put the bin back in and your'e in business! No carpet-screwing required

I think i will replace it with a stock pump. I like keeping it, like from the factory.

That's pretty cool that you are from my town!
What color is your seven? Maybe i seen you around also.

Take care
It's great to know you are out there.

That's funkatronic.

I had an '82 GS and I currently have a '79 GS. Both cars fuel pumps mounted the same way, under the car, directly forward of the fuel filter. All that is required to remove it is to lower the metal cover that it is mounted to and then remove the mounting bolts.

I NEVER EVER had to do ANYTHING with the storage bins.

The ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR for the fuel pump is under the storage bins (or rear seat depending on where you're from).
