Removing front strut from catridge
Removing front strut from catridge
The struts on the front are held in by a large threaded washer looking like thing. What is the correct way to remove this so I can replace my struts. What size is this?
size= HUGE!!
what ive done every time ive changed mine is:
place the strut tube in a vise
have it sitting so when you try to turn it the spindle is against the table and keeps it from spinning
next, take a monkey wrench and put it on the "nut"
give a quick shot of force, and it should loosen
be careful. when the nut comes off a lot of oil will come out right behind it. be prepared for it.

Pipe wrench worked the best for me, same way as aws140 suggested putting it in the vise so it stays put.
Remember to put some oil around your new cartridges that you are putting in. They need it for cooling.

Yes it is recommended for our cartridge styles. Even though the cartridge is a sealed unit the fluid helps it direct heat away from the struts and can prolong the life of them.

bench vise is what i use and a pipe (Not a pipe wrench) . i cover the spindle with a thick rag and bench vise the nut on the spindle and place a pipe on the rag covered spindle and waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh it comes off
its been a long time ... for the SA there is no nut ... a threaded washer with two opposing slots seats flush into cartridge with the top part of the strut coming up through the center of the washer.
put in a vise, there is nothing to grab onto here so tap hard 90 deg into a slot with a blunt object... just keep following it around until it is not flush anymore...by then you can unsrew it by hand
