Removing Flywheel Nut

A couple of weekends ago, I completed my first engine pull. Didn't go too bad, had to use a pair of vice grips to get some bolts off, but other than that, it went pretty smoothly. I want to rebuild the engine and do a little porting so I went to take of the flywheel. I only had sockets that went up to 2in so I had to wait until the next morning to get a 2 1/8in socket. I tried everything to keep the flywheel from turning when I turned the nut but nothing worked.

I am just wondering if you guys have any tricks for removing that flywheel nut. I don't feel like shelling out the money for a flywheel holder from Mazda or whoever sells them. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Chisel and hammer. be sure to grind the sharp end as it will slice the nut.

My flywheel nut was all jacked up from the PO using a chisel (I guess he didnt dull the point tho cause it was messed up). I was able to grind the deformations down and got the 2 1/8 socket on. A little PB blaster and a few seconds with a impact wrench and it spun right off. The pully nut on the other side of the eccentric shaft is what gave me trouble!

I use a 3/4" air impact wrench to drive the socket.
