remove ECU 85 12A
remove ECU 85 12A
I want to get rid of that damn ECU in the passenger side floorpan. I have no rats nest. in the wiring diagram I see there is a "thermo sensor", "heat hazard sensor", "water temp switch", aother "water temp switch" and a lead coming off the (-) of the trailing coil. anyone point me in the right direction? I have stock gauges so i would like to retain the functionality of those for now.
Should i just leave it since i know the car works, before i create my own electrical gremlins.
Thanks,
Ron

Yes! You could move it or build a panel around it if your wanting to hide it but I would keep it.
What do you still have as far as emissions, etc.? Are you still using the Nikki with choke, etc.? If you want to keep a working choke, altitude compensator, etc., you need to keep the ECU. If you are running a different carb and don't have A/C, rats nest, cat converters, etc., you can get rid of the ECU. The only thing that you would need to do is bypass the fuel pump relay. The ECU takes the signal of the trailing coil to determine when the car is running. If the engine stalls, but the key is still on, the ECU will turn off the fuel pump until you try to start it again. It is there primarily as a safety feature, so that in the event of a wreck (assuming the engine stalls), the fuel pump will turn off instead of keeping running and possibly creating or adding to a fire.
you need a:
Holley Safety Fuel Pressure Switches
No oil pressure--no fuel.
It's always a good idea to place a safety switch in the circuit when installing an electric fuel pump. Holley has one that will ensure the electric pump will not work unless the engine has oil pressure. It will prevent the pump from running in a situation where the motor may stall with the ignition ...

I have a nikki but no electric choke, there is no rats nest, no ac, none of the carb solenoids are hooked up. nothing that the ECU would do anyways besides fuel pump.
Wackyracer: so what happens when the car has sat for awhile and the floats go dry? How do you prime it?
thanks for the help guys.
