Red tape on door?

My door

Ray Green's door
I have a piece of red plastic tape on the inside of my driver's door on my 84 gsl se that I thought might have been put there by a previous owner. Never paid it much attention until I saw the same tape on Ray Green's door in the "Door rubbers" post here.I have posted pictures of both doors here. Both cars happen to be silver with red upholstery..Anyone here know the meaning of the tape? Factory recall?

Reflector maybe.

But mine has cryptic symbols visible when photographed at night.

I think it's a message from the Rotary Gods.

Some of it's hard to make out but I think it says "do not remove under penalty of law".

Just a reflector for other motorists in case you are exiting your car at night or the door is opening on the highway in case of a breakdown or flat. Just helps people see that your door is open.

That red tape is on a select few Rx-7's. If you have the red tape, and your rx-7 is over 30 years old, Mazda will give you one-million dollars. So go down to your local Mazda dealership and demand your one-million dollars. Let's all go down today and demand our one-million dollars.

This is a reflective safety sticker to alert incoming traffic if you open your driver's side door at night by the side of the road. It is foil backed fluorescent stock, the same kind used for safety signage. It goes orange under camera flash as that's exactly what it's designed to do - reflect headlights from other cars.

The decal is actually shown in the parts catalogue (no longer available, for what it's worth).

In Australia, we have the same sticker, but on the right hand door (our drivers' side).

A friend of mine and I had a bunch of these reproduced for our restorations. Easy enough to do as it's just a matter of selecting the right decal stock and getting it cut to the right size and shape.
