I think it is a great idea, however very costly. I am in the middle of doing just that. I am not going to and extreme, cause I want to do most of the work myself. I will get the interior, and paintjob pro done, but the rest of the car I am doing myself.
I know nothing about fiberglass parts, but I understand fiberglass is a bitch. Patience is needed.
Good luck.

Money Pit!!!! So true! For the carpet I orederd a carpet kit and have been woking with that. They are not the best, but they do work. Do not order the Victoria British one, I have read they suck. I will take the carpet kit to a local shop and have them seem some of the edges, they dont come seemed most of the time. I did a search here on the forum and found a good place to order it from.

There are two trains of thought on resto-buy an expensive "unmolested" car to start with, or buy a POS. The nicer one will cost a lot more up front, but shouldn't need all the expensive repairs that the POS will.

Ahh, Maya Gold! I had an 81 GSL that color and loved it (to death ). I wish I could find my old pics of it. It made my newer SE look cruddy by comparison, and that's saying something...

I started ordering parts for my car 3 years ago, and had just been waiting for the right time to tear it down. I have the Mariah kit in the garage, new front fenders, RotaryShack 12a Turbo Street Port with Weber down in LA, and allot of other goodies just waiting to go on. Like you said Mills, a POS would cost a fortune, lucky for me, I had a real nice base to start with.

Salesco in San Diego says they have if for $229 complete set. http://www.salesco.com/ The telephone # is 1 800 407 8665. I haven't seen it so don't take that as endorsement. For a show car you probably want a better grade of materials and should probably get it custom made, either from an upholsterer or an existing manufacturer who has the pattern. There are some carpet ads in Hemmings.

I concur with Wankler. Victoria British carpet sucks. I'm still trying to find a good maroon replacement carpet for my FB. I'm going to be patient and try to find original pieces, at least for the front. I've spent about $2500 on my GSL-SE so far and will probably dump that much more on paint and body this winter. I'd go local for the carpet. Bring in a sample of yours to an upholstry shop and get a 'hands on' feel of what it'll look and feel like. It might cost a little more, but you get what you pay for.

House carpet won't hold up. It'll shift around and fall apart. I know, I've seen it first hand. An upholstry shop will mold the carpet to your pan, put the heel pads in and everything. If you want a show car, you are going to have to suck it up and spend a little. You'll be glad you did in the long run.
p.s. nice restoration project Wankler! I'll post my pics one day.....
