Rebuild, tune-up, or just more mods.
So, let me get this off my chest at the start. I -hate- the winter for driving my 1st gen. The high torque and slippery hills don't really work in my advantage, especially when I have to control the idle manually until the engine attains a nice, warm temperature.
So far, the only mods currently equipped to my relatively stock Limited edition 82 RX, are the massive 4 barrel holley carb, and my beloved Arkay turbo kit,, which all came with the vehicle when I purchased it 2 years back. On the same day that I bought it, the exhaust needed attention, so I switched over to a single flow, 2.5 inch exhaust, which, turbo back and without a cat, emits a nice hum when needed. The seals for the wastegate and turbo will undoubtedly need replacement, that is, as long as I can find them for this specific model.
As my spark plugs appear to need a replacement soon due to foul tips, I'm still perturbed at the vast amount of smoke that it emits on start up, along with the high level of burning oil and possible leakage through the turbo's seals and oil hoses.
-----
At 131,000 km, I'm assuming it would be near time to check all the seals and bearings of the rotors, and I've been considering an Intercooler for the obvious effects of the constantly running turbo.
For now, I've got the car parked. Still skeptic of the icy road conditions and lack of open, and dry pavement, I was wondering if there was any immediate danger involving the large amount of smoke that fumes from the exhaust in an overwhelming amount, and the carb, which smokes only after a few minutes of idle.
So if you have any help for the aspiring Rex'er, please feel free to respond

Have RX-7, will restore
iTrader: (91)
i would not think that teh engine would need a rebuild yet. i would consider the oil seals in the turbo as the first culprit. the oil that is being burned by the engine due to the bad turbo seals will eventually foul the plugs. its bound to happen if oil is being thrown into the combustion chamber. what i would do is pull the plugs and do a compression test. this will put your mind at ease if you get good numbers. then, replace the turbo and plugs.
i dont drive my 7's in the snow. its just asking for trouble. i have in the past due to a lack of another vehicle to drive but no longer will i drive one in the winter.

I'll try the compression test and see about the apex seals(which appear to be pretty expensive). Keeping my eye out for a turbo and intercooler, as well as components for my current one.

So, does anyone have a spare turbo in hand?
So, the verdict is...after much deliberation and replacement of the current plugs...that my Arkay turbo has had it.
Does anyone have access to any 1st Gen turbo kits? Or, if it would be a straight mount, just the turbo alone?
Any feedback would be awesome.
